About Gurbani Sangeet: A Sacred Tradition

When learning Gurbani Sangeet with us, we do not simply teach notes. We focus on the exact raag—such as Bilawal, Tukhari, or Bhupali—and the specific taal required for each shabad. You will learn the traditional 'baithak' (floor seating) posture and the correct hand-weight distribution needed for your harmonium or string instrument to produce the resonant sound necessary for sacred kirtan.

Gurbani Sangeet is more than music; it is a spiritual practice rooted in the tradition of Guru Nanak. Our curriculum at Khalsa Music Academy is designed to preserve the sanctity of Shabad Kirtan by focusing on the core elements of Hindustani classical music: Raag and Taal. Whether you are performing a shabad in Raag Tukhari or practicing the 12-beat Ektaal, we ensure your execution adheres to the classical discipline required for sacred music.

Our Approach

  • Theoretical Foundation: Students start by understanding the structure of Gurbani shabads. We explain how the choice of raag impacts the emotional tone and spiritual intent of the composition.
  • Instrumental Skill: Training covers harmonium, tabla, and traditional string instruments like the rabab or dilruba. You will learn to accompany vocals, focusing on the subtle micro-tonal variations (shruti) that define authentic Kirtan.
  • Practical Application: We hold regular 'baithaks'—traditional group practice sessions—where students perform together. This environment helps you develop the listening skills and rhythmic precision needed to play in an ensemble.

Online and Offline Flexibility

We understand that students have different learning needs. We offer structured in-person classes in Delhi for those who benefit from direct, hands-on guidance. For those who cannot attend in person, our online coaching program provides the same rigor, using high-quality audio to ensure you master every note and nuance of the Raag. We treat every student as a member of our academy family, providing the personalized feedback necessary to transform from a student into a dedicated Kirtan practitioner.
