Tabla Accompaniment and Training for Gurbani Kirtan

Experience the rhythmic soul of Gurbani Kirtan. Whether you need professional accompaniment for a shabad or want to learn the sacred art of tabla, I am here to share my journey.

A Gurbani Kirtan performance in TeenTaal. Notice how the tabla rhythm provides a steady and uplifting foundation for the vocalists. Learning to accompany shabads is a special focus I offer.

Here I am playing in Dadra Taal, a 6 beat cycle, during a live Gurbani telecast. This taal has a flowing, gentle feel that is perfect for many devotional compositions.

This clip shows a close up of a 'Tihai' I played during a kirtan. A Tihai is a rhythmic phrase repeated three times to land perfectly on the 'Sum' or first beat, adding a beautiful conclusion to a musical line.

A powerful shabad about spiritual heroism. The tabla here is played with energy to match the valorous theme of the composition, showing how rhythm can convey emotion.

In this kirtan performance, I am playing a 'Chakkardaar Paran' within the TeenTaal framework. This is a complex composition that adds a layer of rhythmic intricacy to the performance.

Part four of a series on playing 'Sangat' in Dadra Taal. Consistency and clarity are key when accompanying other musicians in a Gurdwara setting.

Part three of the Dadra Taal series. You can hear how the tabla and harmonium work together, creating a seamless musical experience for the Sangat.

About this collection

When I play for Gurbani, my goal is sangat—total connection with the shabad and the vocalist. You won't just see me keeping time; I am listening to the breath and the emotion of the shabad, adjusting my Dadra or TeenTaal to match the flow so the rhythm supports the meditation rather than dominating it.

For me, the tabla is a tool for spiritual expression. My work in Gurdwaras like Sis Ganj Sahib has taught me that the tabla player has a sacred duty to provide stability. It is not about showing off, but about creating a foundation that allows the Kirtan to be the main focus.

My Approach to Kirtan Accompaniment

  • Sangat (Companionship): I focus on listening. A true sangat player anticipates the vocalist's needs, whether it's a subtle increase in volume for a powerful pauri or a delicate touch during a quieter section.
  • Taal Versatility: While Dadra (6 beats) and TeenTaal (16 beats) are the foundation of many shabads, I enjoy exploring how variations in these cycles can reflect different emotional states of a composition.
  • Technical Precision: In my classes, we don't just learn the bols. We learn how to use fillers to maintain energy during long shabads, and how to execute a tihai that lands perfectly on the sum to signal a beautiful conclusion.

Learning with Me

If you are interested in learning, we start with the base. A strong, clear sound on the Dayan and Bayan is non-negotiable. Whether you are an absolute beginner or looking to refine your Kirtan accompaniment skills, I offer both online video lessons and, for those in Delhi, home tuition where we can jam together to improve your posture and rhythm accuracy. We will learn theory, but we will also learn how to listen.
