Tabla Rhythms for Bhajans, Gurbani & Qawwali
Bring the soul of devotional music into your playing. From meditative Gurbani kirtans to high-energy bhajans, learn the rhythms that connect with the heart.
A solo tabla performance accompanying a Sufi song. The rhythms in Sufi music are deeply expressive and require a lot of heart, which is something I emphasize in my teaching.
Our musical tribute for the Ayodhya Ram Mandir consecration, playing a "Jai Shree Ram" dhun. We often play devotional music to celebrate important spiritual occasions.
Playing a Gurbani shabad, "Vade Mere Sahiba." The tabla plays a vital role in Sikh devotional music, providing a steady and meditative rhythm for the kirtan.
A Sawan special, playing a theka dedicated to Lord Shiva. The sound of the tabla is central to many Hindu devotional songs and bhajans. Har Har Mahadev.
Celebrating Shivratri with a tabla rendition of "Karpur Gauram." Playing these ancient chants connects us to our culture and spirituality.
A tabla cover of the bhajan "Shri Ram Janki Baithe hai Mere Seene Mein" for Hanuman Jayanti. I teach students the specific rhythms and patterns used in devotional music.
Our group playing the bhajan "Saja Do Ghar Ko Gulshan Sa" for Jai Shree Shyam. The energy in the room is always special when we play devotional music together.
A solo tabla cover of a classic NFAK qawwali. The intricate and powerful rhythms of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music are a fantastic challenge for any tabla player.
About Soulful Rhythms: Bhajans, Gurbani & Qawwali
In our devotional sessions, we focus on the bhaav (feeling) behind the music as much as the technique. Playing for a home pooja or a Jagran requires a different touch than a Bollywood cover, so we specifically practice how to shift from the steady, meditative tempo needed for Gurbani shabads to the lively, rapid-fire beats used in bhajans.
When you learn devotional percussion, you aren't just memorizing beats. You are learning how to support the singer and hold the rhythm for an entire gathering. At Rythem Home Music Academy, we train in a traditional baithak (floor-seated) style, which helps you develop the correct hand position and posture for long devotional sessions.
What We Cover
- Rhythmic Foundations: We start with Keherwa and Dadra taals, which are the backbone of most bhajans and devotional songs. You will learn to play these with the variations that add depth to a song.
- Dholak vs. Tabla: While the tabla is great for classical precision, I also teach dholak techniques specifically for folk and devotional singing. Having both in your toolkit makes you much more versatile.
- Qawwali & Sufi Patterns: We explore the entrancing, cyclical rhythms of Sufi music, focusing on how to build intensity and release it at the right moment, similar to the style of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
The Learning Environment
Classes here are not just lectures. They are jam sessions. Whether you are prepping for a specific spiritual event or just want to play along with your favorite kirtan tracks, the goal is to get your hands moving comfortably. We use Bluetooth backing tracks to simulate a real-world setting, so by the time you leave the academy, you are ready to play for your family and friends. Yahan dosti bhi music wali hoti hai (here, even friendships are musical). Whether you are a total beginner or an experienced player looking to refine your devotional touch, you will find a place here.
