Explore the foundational projects that defined our practice. These works demonstrate an enduring commitment to architecture that prioritizes human connection and environmental harmony.

An original presentation drawing of the iconic Jivan Maneck tower, completed in 1968. This sketch captures the dramatic, sculptural ambition of the project, which was carved into the challenging terrain of Malabar Hill.

A detail of Jivan Maneck's facade, looking up at the sky. The powerful rhythm of the curved balconies creates a sense of upward movement, a design that remains striking and modern even today.

The Jivan Maneck residential tower in Mumbai, built in 1968. Its undulating facade and bold form stand as a testament to timeless design, an icon that continues to be a reference point for residential architecture in the city.

An archival sketch exploring early concepts for multi-family housing in Bombay. Even then, my focus was on introducing a sense of 'home-ness' into apartment living, moving beyond purely functional design to create spaces for human connection.

About A Legacy of Design: Archival Projects

When we developed the Jivan Maneck tower in 1968, we deliberately chose to carve the structure into the challenging Malabar Hill terrain rather than leveling the site. This decision proved that respecting the existing topography creates a more striking, sculptural form, a principle we still apply to every township and redevelopment project today to ensure the built environment works with, not against, the land.

Architecture is rarely about the initial sketch; it is about the sustained dialogue between a structure and its context over time. In our archival projects, you will notice that we have always favored a philosophy of 'home-ness' over the sterile efficiency of a machine for living. Whether looking at early multi-family housing in Mumbai or our later campus designs, our focus remains on creating spaces where social energy can flourish.

The Principle of Context-Responsiveness

Our early work taught us that buildings cannot be copy-pasted across different locations. The climate, the specific soil, and the orientation of the sun must dictate the design. For example, our use of curved balconies and rhythmic facades in 1968 was not merely for aesthetics—it was a method to handle the specific wind and light conditions of the Mumbai coastline, fostering natural ventilation that remains relevant today.

From Legacy to Modern Application

We do not view these older projects as finished chapters, but as active references. The lessons we learned from navigating statutory approvals and complex site conditions decades ago now inform our current Project Management Consultancy (PMC) for housing society redevelopment. We take the same rigor we applied to iconic landmarks and bring it to modern urban renewal, ensuring that legacy and innovation are not mutually exclusive, but are instead two sides of the same design process.
