Yoga with Props: Deepen Your Practice Safely
Props are not crutches, they are tools for deeper exploration. Whether you need support for an injury or want to safely achieve a complex asana, we use blocks, straps, wheels, and wall ropes to help your body open up.
This clip shows students using yoga wheels to find mobility in their spines. Rolling on the wheel helps to release tension in the back muscles and encourages a deeper, more open backbend.
A demonstration of how to use yoga blocks and wall straps for a deep leg stretch. This video breaks down the steps to safely work towards Hanumanasana (the splits).
This video shows an easy way to practice a Scorpion Pose variation using a yoga block for support under the chest. Props can help you build the strength and confidence for advanced inversions.
A student practices Mayurasana (Peacock Pose) with the help of yoga blocks and a strap. This setup provides support and helps build the arm and core strength required for this challenging arm balance.
Another student working on her Mayurasana (Peacock Pose) using blocks for support. This shows how we can adjust the props to suit each individual's body and current strength level.
This student uses a strap around her arms and blocks under her feet to maintain stability in Mayurasana. Props are excellent tools for learning the correct alignment in complex poses.
This video shows an advanced forward bending drill using a chair and weights for added intensity. This should only be practiced under the guidance of an experienced teacher to improve flexibility safely.
A student demonstrates incredible core strength by holding a horizontal plank supported only by her feet on the wall and hands in yoga ropes. This is an advanced wall rope yoga technique.
Using wall ropes, this student performs a deep backbend, a variation of Karnapidasana. The ropes provide support while allowing for a full release and stretch of the spine.
This student holds a perfect horizontal plank using the wall ropes. This asana builds immense core and upper body strength and requires intense focus and control.
About Yoga with Props: Deeper Stretches & Support
If you struggle with tight hamstrings or back pain, do not just push through the discomfort. In our sessions, we use yoga straps to gently extend your reach and yoga wheels to safely release tension in the spine. It is not about forcing your body into a pose, but using these tools to find the alignment that feels right for you today.
Many people think props are only for beginners, but in my classes, I use them to help you refine your practice. Whether you are working on flexibility or trying to hold a challenging asana, tools like blocks, bolsters, and wall ropes provide the feedback your body needs to understand proper alignment.
Why we use props
- Safety First: Using blocks under your hands in poses like Vasisthasana (Side Plank) provides lift and stability, protecting your wrists and shoulders.
- Deepening Practice: We use straps to bridge the gap in forward bends, allowing you to focus on the stretch rather than the strain. It helps you stay in the pose long enough to actually reap the benefits.
- Therapeutic Support: My wall rope sessions are excellent for spinal traction. They allow you to decompress the spine using gravity, which is a key part of the therapeutic work I do for chronic back pain or frozen shoulder issues.
- Accessibility: If you cannot sit on the floor comfortably, we use chairs and bolsters to modify the asana, ensuring everyone can participate regardless of physical limitations.
I personally oversee every session, providing hands-on adjustments to ensure you are using the equipment correctly. This is not just about stretching; it is about building awareness of your body so you can practice safely, whether you are at our Greater Kailash or Vasant Kunj studios, or at the Kailash Health Village in Noida.
