The Art of Alignment: Using Props
Think of props as partners, not crutches. Whether it is wall ropes, blocks, or chairs, we use them to bring the floor to you and help you hold poses safely, no matter your flexibility level.
Wall ropes can transform your practice. Here, a student uses the ropes to decompress the spine and open the shoulders in a supported version of Downward-Facing Dog, making the pose more therapeutic.
Ready to turn your world upside down? With the help of our ceiling ropes, inversions become accessible and safe, allowing you to experience the benefits of increased blood flow to the brain and a new perspective.
Using a chair for support in Salamba Sarvangasana (Supported Shoulderstand) helps maintain alignment and reduces pressure on the neck. This makes the "queen of asanas" safer and more restorative.
Props help us find the correct alignment. Here, students use wall ropes and blocks in Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose) to open the chest and lengthen the spine without strain.
Using the wall and a rope for support in Virabhadrasana I (Warrior I) helps stabilize the pose and deepen the stretch in the hips and shoulders, allowing for a more focused practice.
Blocks are essential tools for proper alignment. In Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose), a block under the hand brings the floor closer, preventing the torso from collapsing and keeping the spine long.
The wall is one of our best props. Practicing a handstand against the wall helps build the strength and confidence needed for inversions, while ensuring safety and proper form.
In our advanced workshops, we use props to safely explore challenging poses. Here, a student uses blocks for support while learning the foundations of Sirsasana (Headstand).
The wall provides excellent feedback for alignment. In Virabhadrasana III (Warrior III), pressing the hands and lifted foot into the wall helps to square the hips and engage the core.
Even a simple pose can be enhanced with a prop. Using the wall for support in this one-legged standing pose helps with balance and allows for a deeper focus on lifting and lengthening the spine.
About The Art of Alignment: Using Props
Many students tell me they feel clumsy or stuck in poses, often forcing their bodies into shapes that cause more strain than relief. That is where props change everything. By using wall ropes, wooden blocks, or chairs, we take away the constant struggle of wondering if you can reach the floor and replace it with a focus on where your muscles should actually be working. It is not about how deep you go, but how safely you align your spine and joints.
Why We Use Props
In our studio, a prop is not something you use because you are 'weak' or 'new'. It is a tool for precision. When you are struggling to touch your toes in Trikonasana (Triangle Pose), your back often rounds and your chest collapses. By placing a wooden block under your hand, we lift the floor to you. This keeps your spine straight, your chest open, and your breathing steady.
The Wall Ropes & Iyengar Influence
Inspired by the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar, we use wall ropes and slings to create traction. If you have chronic back pain or tight shoulders, these ropes act as a support system. They allow you to decompress your spine and move into inversions safely, without the fear of falling or the heavy strain on your neck and wrists. It is a game-changer for anyone dealing with stiffness.
Chairs & Bolsters for Restorative Practice
Not every session is about dynamic strength. Sometimes, your body needs to rest. We use chairs to support the body in backbends and restorative poses, which helps calm the nervous system. This is specifically effective for students dealing with stress or those who are recovering from injury.
Who is this for?
Whether you are a complete beginner or someone who has practiced for years but feels stuck at a plateau, using props will help you break through. You will learn to engage the correct muscles, prevent injury, and eventually build the confidence to practice without them.
