Experience the depth of a solo tabla recital, where rhythm takes center stage. From traditional Punjab Gharana compositions to live improvisation, I bring the art of Hindustani percussion to your event.

Explaining a rhythmic concept to the audience during a solo performance. I believe in making classical music accessible and sharing the stories behind the compositions.

A glimpse of my solo tabla recital during the Gurupurnima 2025 celebrations, an offering to my Guru. I was accompanied by the wonderful Siddhesh Bicholkar on harmonium.

A moment of connection with the audience during a solo piece. The energy exchanged during a live concert is a vital part of the performance.

Deep in concentration during a complex rhythmic cycle. A solo performance is a test of focus, stamina, and creativity, all learned through years of dedicated riyaz.

A candid shot from the Gurupurnima 2025 concert. Even in the most intense moments of a performance, there are moments of quiet introspection.

A view from the audience, with my Guruji, Pt. Yogesh Samsi ji, listening intently. Performing in front of him is the greatest honor and challenge.

A focused shot from a concert in 2024. The stage lighting and acoustics of a good auditorium can elevate a performance.

This is from the Gurupurnima celebrations in 2024. I am performing a solo piece, accompanied by Nilay Salvi on the harmonium, for my Guru and our musical family.

A smile shared with the audience during a lighter moment in my solo. Music is not just serious, it is also about sharing joy.

A moment of pranaam, or respectful greeting, to the stage and my instruments before starting my performance. It is a gesture of gratitude for the music.

About Tabla Solo: The Heart of Rhythm

A tabla solo is more than just playing drums. It is a live conversation between the tabla and the lehra player. I prioritize getting the tuning and acoustics right before every performance, so we can focus entirely on the nuances of the taal rather than fighting with the sound system.

When I step on stage for a solo recital, the objective is to explore the depth of the Punjab Gharana. A typical performance flows from the slow, foundational pace of the Peshkar, moving into the rhythmic variations of Kayda and Rela, and eventually culminating in high-energy Tihai compositions. I believe in explaining these nuances through Padhant, which is vocal recitation, before playing, so the audience understands the mathematical beauty behind what they are hearing.

For the logistics, I work closely with a Lehra player on harmonium or sarangi to maintain the melodic framework. We need dedicated microphones like the SM57 to capture the crisp nikas and the deep bass resonance. I ask for at least 45 minutes of sound check time to ensure the Dayan is perfectly matched to the main pitch. Whether you are hosting an intimate baithak for 30 people in a living room or a formal concert at a larger venue in Mumbai or Pune, my approach remains the same: pure, unamplified or balanced sound that lets the instrument speak for itself.
