About Public, Institutional & Heritage Spaces
Our approach to the public realm goes beyond mere aesthetics; we focus on functional placemaking that transforms underused areas into active social hubs. For instance, in our work at the Bandra Fort amphitheater and the IIT Madras Research Park, we utilized biophilic design and geometric seating to bridge the gap between hard infrastructure and natural, user-friendly gathering spaces. We don't just build for the visual; we design for how people move, sit, and interact within these environments.
At Green Space Alliance, we view public, institutional, and heritage spaces as the essential infrastructure of a functional city. Our process starts with deep site analysis, often incorporating GIS-based topography and slope mapping, to understand how a site can best serve its community.
For heritage sites, such as our work at Bandra Fort, we focus on sensitive restoration that integrates modern amenities with historic context, ensuring the location remains a vibrant venue for arts and culture. Our institutional design work, including the campus master planning for IIT Madras, draws inspiration from traditional spatial configurations—such as the Indian 'kund' or stepped tank—to create courtyards that naturally encourage academic and social exchange.
We emphasize the following in our public realm projects:
- Ecological Restoration: Using native planting palettes and bioswales to manage storm water runoff naturally.
- Accessibility: Ensuring 100% wheelchair and stroller access is woven into the primary circulation network.
- Material Integrity: Selecting vandalism-proof and weather-resistant materials suited for high-footfall public use.
- Complete Streets: Designing safe, pedestrian-friendly corridors that link public spaces to the wider urban fabric.
Whether we are activating a 2 km-long linear park in Pimple Saudagar or creating new plazas for corporate campuses, our goal is the same: to produce environments that reduce urban heat islands, improve micro-climates, and ultimately provide a sense of belonging for every user.
