Learning from Nature: Outdoor Sketching at Cubbon Park
Trade your studio walls for the canopy of Cubbon Park. We guide you through the discipline of plein air sketching, helping you observe light, shadow, and life directly from nature.
Our classroom extends into the heart of nature. Join our outdoor sketching sessions in Cubbon Park, where we learn to observe the world with an artist's eye, guided by our mentors and inspired by the earth itself.
A morning sketching session at Cubbon Park concludes. Our students gather under the trees, learning the art of landscape drawing and plein air composition in a peaceful, natural setting.
Join us for a free sketching session at Cubbon Park. This video captures the experience of drawing outdoors, with mentors providing demonstrations and students practicing their skills amidst the beauty of nature.
About this collection
These Sunday morning sessions are not about comfort. You will be sitting on public benches or curbs in Cubbon Park, working with the tools you bring. We enforce the same strict, no-eraser discipline outdoors as we do in our studio. If you draw a line, it stays. This practice forces you to trust your observation, learn from your mistakes, and capture the scene before the light changes.
Our outdoor sketching module is a 12-week commitment to the practice of 'Plein Air' art. This isn't just drawing a tree; it is understanding how light hits the leaves, how the shadow moves as the morning progresses, and how to compose a scene in a changing environment.
The Gurukul Discipline
We believe the classroom is wherever you choose to observe. Guided by mentors like Mahesh Huliyur, you will learn to navigate the challenges of working outdoors. There are no studio amenities here, no easels provided by us, and no shelter from the weather. This environment strips away the unnecessary, leaving only you, your sketchpad, and the subject.
The 'No Eraser' Principle
Our core teaching remains constant: 'Eraser mat use karo, jo bhi galat rekhayein hain - rehne dijiye.' (Don't use an eraser, let the wrong lines stay.) When you are sketching outdoors, the light changes too fast to correct mistakes. You learn to accept them. Those 'wrong' lines become part of your progress. They show you where you looked and how you thought.

We are Fine Arts Gurukul, where art is a practice, not a weekend hobby. Our gurukul system strips away the distraction of competition to focus entirely on your growth as an artist, starting every session with an invocation.
