Master Traditional Indian Folk Art
Delve into the stories and techniques of India’s heritage arts. We teach authentic Kalamkari, Madhubani, and Saura painting in a focused, traditional studio setting.
Kalamkari, or "pen craftsmanship," is an ancient art form we are proud to teach. Using natural dyes and a traditional "kalam," students learn to create intricate designs that tell stories of mythology and nature.
Journey into the "Forest of Honey" with Madhubani art. Originating from the Mithila region, this style is known for its geometric patterns and vibrant depictions of nature, deities, and life events.
Saura art is a sacred, ritualistic tradition from Eastern India. Originally painted on clay walls, these artworks use symbolic stick-figure motifs to depict the interconnectedness of nature, community, and the divine.
"Ee roopam Krishnarpanam." A mixed-media artwork inspired by traditional Indian forms, this piece dedicated to Krishna blends different techniques and styles to create a rich, devotional expression.
This Ganesha artwork by Kavitha Jetti blends folk art motifs with a unique personal style. It reflects the intellectual and spiritual symbolism of Ganesha, rendered with intricate lines and subtle color.
Discover the ancient art of Kalamkari, a practice of storytelling through pen and natural dyes. We guide students through the detailed process, from the initial line work to the application of vibrant, earthy colors, preserving a timeless tradition.
About this collection
In our folk art modules, we go beyond simple aesthetics. You will learn the historical significance of each motif—be it the geometric balance of Madhubani or the storytelling lineage of Kalamkari—while working on traditional materials like treated canvas and handmade paper in our Jayanagar studio.
Indian folk art is not just about making a pretty image. It is about preserving a language of lines and symbols that has been passed down through generations. At Fine Arts Gurukul, we approach these heritage forms with the seriousness they deserve.
When you join our sessions, we start with the roots. For Kalamkari, you will learn why the 'kalam' (pen) is essential for those intricate mythic narratives. For Madhubani, we guide you through the 'Forest of Honey' style, where every geometric pattern serves a purpose in traditional Mithila storytelling. We also teach Saura art, helping you understand how simple stick-figure motifs depict the interconnectedness of nature and community.
We provide the access, the methodology, and the studio space. You bring the patience. Our classes are conducted in a non-competitive, calm environment where the goal is to deepen your understanding of these traditions. Whether you are working on a piece dedicated to Krishna or studying the ritualistic symbolism behind ancient wall paintings, we ensure you have the technical foundation to execute it accurately. All sessions follow our core Gurukul principle: leave the eraser behind, let the lines be, and trust the process.
