We take art out of the studio and into nature. Join our guided outdoor study tours to master landscape painting, perspective, and live sketching in scenic locations around Mumbai.

Our 2024 study tour was an unforgettable experience of art, nature, and friendship. We sketched beautiful landscapes, enjoyed meals together, and created lasting memories.

Our outdoor study tours bring our whole community together. Here is our happy group of artists, from young kids to adults, ready for a day of live sketching and learning in nature.

"It's a very good experience, it's a fun experience," says one of our students. Hearing feedback like this during our outdoor tours, like this one at Worli, is what motivates us.

"The faculty is really nice, really helpful," a student shares during our landscape tour. We focus on giving detailed guidance to help everyone, even first timers, enjoy live watercolor painting.

As the founder, I believe study tours are essential. They teach students to observe, enjoy, and learn from the world around them, which is the true essence of being an artist.

A moment of peace and focus. Our annual study tour provides the perfect setting for students to connect with nature and translate its beauty into their art.

Our instructors lead by example during study tours. Here, an artist demonstrates live landscape painting techniques for our fine art students by the water in Karjat.

About Art in the Open: Sketching & Study Tours

On our study tours, we don't just paint, we observe. Whether we’re in Karjat or local parks, I teach you how to choose your frame, manage watercolor washes in humidity, and find your perspective on site. You’ll need to bring your own easel and paints, but we handle the AC bus, the meals, and the spot selection.

Painting en plein air (outdoors) changes how you see the world. It is not just about finishing a picture; it is about capturing the fleeting light on a tree or the complex geometry of a heritage arch.

What you learn on tour

We start with the basics of site selection. Before picking up a brush, we analyze our surroundings—identifying the focal point, understanding the angle of the sun, and simplifying complex landscapes into manageable shapes. We cover water-soluble mediums, managing color washes in changing light, and techniques for fast, accurate sketching.

Logistics & Comfort

We keep things simple so you can focus entirely on your canvas. We provide the AC transport from Mumbai and the meals. While we handle the creative guidance and site permissions, students are responsible for their own portable easels, art boards, watercolor or acrylic sets, and brushes. Don't forget to pack a mat or newspaper to sit on, as we often work directly on the ground.

Who this is for

These tours are a mix of our Fine Arts diploma students, hobby learners, and families. Seeing a senior student painting side-by-side with a younger learner is what makes Grahin special. Whether you are prepping for an entrance exam or just looking to disconnect from the city grind for a day, the canvas is waiting. We believe in learning with joy, so bring your enthusiasm and let's create something real.
