Foundational Sketching & Observational Drawing Classes

Start your creative journey by training your eye. I teach the core principles of proportion, perspective, and shading so you can draw what you actually see, not just what you think you see.

Collaboration and focus are key in the studio. Here, students work side by side, one sketching on paper and the other digitally, to master the fundamentals of drawing.

Look at the detail in this crab and beetle hybrid sketch. We focus on combining different elements to create imaginative creatures, pushing students to think about anatomy and texture in new ways.

The final stages of a detailed insect drawing. Using fine-tipped pens and pencils, the student adds the finishing touches that bring the creature's form and texture to life.

We often take our sketchbooks outdoors. Here, students are practicing observational sketching in a local park, learning to capture the forms and textures of nature directly from life.

A student practices one-point perspective by sketching a park pathway. This exercise helps build an intuitive understanding of how to create depth and distance in a drawing.

About this collection

Sketching is not about perfectly copying a photograph; it is about understanding how light hits a surface and how depth works in real life. Whether you are sketching a cup of chai in our HSR studio or studying tree textures in a local park, I focus on helping you build an intuitive grasp of forms that makes your design portfolio stand out.

Building a solid foundation in drawing is the most critical step for anyone serious about art or design, especially if you are prepping for entrance exams like NID, NIFT, UCEED, or IIAD. In these sessions, we strip away the complex layers and focus on the essentials: how to hold a pencil, how to measure proportions, and how to create the illusion of three-dimensional depth on a two-dimensional page.

My approach is to move students from simple geometric shapes to complex, organic forms. We spend significant time on observational drawing, which means we often leave the studio to sketch in parks or capture everyday objects. This practice helps you understand how light, shadow, and perspective change based on your environment.

We cover:

  • Pencil shading and line weight: Developing the muscle memory needed for controlled, confident strokes.
  • Anatomical understanding: Breaking down complex structures into basic shapes to make drawing figures or objects easier.
  • Perspective: Learning one-point and two-point perspective to accurately depict buildings, streets, and interiors.
  • Texture studies: Developing the patience to render details like fur, scales, or bark, which adds life and realism to your work.

This isn't a passive class. You will be actively engaged in solving visual problems, correcting your own mistakes, and learning to critique your work. By the end of our sessions, you will have a sketchbook filled with studies that demonstrate your growing ability to translate the world around you onto paper with accuracy and style.
