About this collection
When commissioning a family portrait, the primary challenge lies in composition, particularly when merging figures from separate photographs into one cohesive scene. I carefully balance lighting and spatial relationships to ensure that despite the difference in original reference images, the final canvas feels like a singular, unified moment of family connection.
The creation of a family portrait is an exercise in preservation. When you entrust me with your family's likeness, I approach the canvas with the intent to document not just physical features, but the interplay of relationships. My process is structured to ensure technical longevity and emotional accuracy.
The Artistic Process
Every group commission begins with a thorough consultation regarding your reference photographs. Since family members are often captured in different settings, my work involves a meticulous merging process. I harmonize lighting, shadows, and perspective to create a unified environment that feels natural rather than contrived. I provide 2-3 visual updates throughout the process—ranging from the initial line sketch to base coloring—ensuring you remain involved as the painting evolves.
Materials and Longevity
For family and group works, I utilize heavy-duty gallery-wrapped cotton duck canvas, selected for its structural stability over time. My medium of choice is professional-grade heavy body acrylics. These are chosen for their lightfastness and durability. Each piece is finalized with a non-yellowing archival varnish, which protects the pigment from environmental factors and enhances color depth, ensuring the piece remains a permanent family heirloom.
Including Animal Companions
I have observed that pets are integral members of the family unit. I apply the same technical rigor to painting animal fur textures as I do to human skin tones and clothing embroidery. Whether you wish for a subtle inclusion or a prominent feature, I handle pet portraiture with the specific attention required to capture their spirit accurately.
Given the large scale (typically 36x48 inches for families of four) and the complexity of these compositions, I dedicate 30 to 40 days of studio time to each piece to ensure the required level of detail.
Pratap Badtya
I am Pratap. My perspective on portraiture is rooted in the discipline I acquired at the Sir J.J. School of Art, where I learned that a painting must transcend simple likeness. When I paint a family, I am not merely replicating faces; I am attempting to capture the unspoken bonds and the specific energy that exists between people and their animal companions.
