Sketches and Conceptual Illustrations by Pratap
An exploration of human emotion and memory through raw charcoal, pencil, and conceptual illustration.
A compilation of my portrait sketches. These drawings, often done in pencil or charcoal, are exercises in capturing expression and form, and serve as the foundation for my painting skills.
This conceptual sketch combines portraiture with abstract natural forms. It is a personal exploration of the connection between human emotion, represented by my mother's smile, and the organic structures of nature.
A pen and ink illustration that contemplates themes of devotion and memory. The work layers different figures and symbols to create a complex visual narrative.
This drawing is part of a series where I reflect on social observations through visual metaphor. The sketch juxtaposes different elements to provoke thought and conversation.
A pencil sketch exploring the theme of relationships and companionship. The composition uses two distinct poses to convey a sense of narrative and connection.
This piece is a quick, expressive sketch that aims to capture a single, fleeting emotion. The raw and unrefined lines are part of its intended effect.
This painting, titled 'Shringar', is a departure from my commissioned portraits. It is a more personal work exploring tribal aesthetics and identity, rendered in my signature acrylic style.
About this collection
These sketches and conceptual works are the genesis of my larger practice. Before a single drop of acrylic touches a canvas, I use these studies to isolate the core emotion of a subject. When you look at these pieces, you are seeing the raw dialogue between the charcoal and the paper, representing a moment of thought, hesitation, or memory that often gets smoothed over in a finished painting.
My approach to drawing is rooted in the fundamental discipline of observation. While my final portraits aim for a hyper-realistic finish, these sketches serve as the necessary foundation. They are an exercise in stripping away the excess to find the truth of a face or a feeling. I treat every pencil stroke as a record of a specific moment, whether it is a fleeting expression captured live or a conceptual illustration built to explore themes of devotion and personal history.
Many of these works incorporate text, which I see as an essential layer of the narrative. By layering written thought alongside the visual form, I aim to provoke a conversation about the human condition, social observations, and the quiet struggles that often go unnoticed in our daily lives. These are not merely preparatory drawings. They are independent pieces of art that capture the interplay between academic precision and the organic, often chaotic reality of human experience. If you are looking for an artwork that moves beyond simple likeness to capture a philosophy or a specific, unspoken truth, this medium allows for a deeper level of intimacy.
Pratap Badtya
I do not believe in simply copying a face; I strive to capture the internal reality that exists beneath the surface. My training at the Sir J.J. School of Art informs my technique, but my heart lies in the narratives I weave through every sketch and conceptual piece.
