Bringing the intricate rhythms of the Farukhabad Gharana to Kathak. I love the dialogue that happens between my tabla bols and a dancer's footwork.

Preparing for an upcoming performance with a Kathak dancer. Here, I am exploring some traditional dance compositions and bols like 'Tat tat thei' and 'digi digi thei' to create a perfect rhythmic sync.

During an interview session for Darbar Festival with the wonderful Kathak artist Nikki Chawla. We discussed the beautiful relationship between tabla and dance.

About Rhythm in Motion: Tabla for Kathak Dance

When I accompany a Kathak dancer, I don't just keep time. I study the dancer's specific bols (syllables) and tatkar (footwork) beforehand so that every dha on the tabla aligns perfectly with the heavy thud of the ghungroos. It’s a real conversation on stage, where my instrument breathes with their movement.

Accompanying Kathak is a unique rhythmic challenge. Unlike a solo recital where I dictate the pace, here, I must adapt to the dancer’s energy and interpret their movements in real-time. My preparation usually involves going through the dancer's specific compositions well in advance. Whether it's the crisp Tat tat thei or the complex digi digi bols, the goal is total synergy between the percussion and the dancer. I focus on clear, resonant strokes that cut through the sound of the ghungroos without overpowering them. Having performed at venues like the Barbican Centre and various festivals, I understand how crucial it is to get the mic balance right between the stage floor and the percussion setup. I am comfortable with both subtle, soft sequences and high-energy tihai endings. If you are a dancer or an event organizer looking for a reliable rhythmic partner for your next show, I am happy to discuss your specific requirements and how we can make the performance special.

I’m Debjit. For me, the tabla isn’t just an instrument; it’s my daily sadhana. I’m deeply honoured to collaborate with Kathak dancers, turning every performance into a shared rhythmic conversation.
