I often get asked about the difference between a private baithak and a stage performance. In an intimate baithak, I focus on the nuances and rare compositions of the Farukhabad Gharana that require a quiet, listening audience. For larger events, I bring the energy of a jugalbandi, balancing rhythmic mathematics with an interactive flow that keeps the crowd engaged and connected to the music.
The art of playing the tabla is a conversation. When I perform, I am not just hitting a drum, I am responding to the artist beside me or the energy in the room.
My approach is rooted in the Farukhabad Gharana, a style known for its clarity of strokes and intricate compositions. Whether you are planning a small home concert, a corporate event, or a wedding reception, I tailor my performance to fit the setting. For a classical baithak, I bring the traditional setup, focusing on the beauty of the Peshkar and the meditative flow of a solo recital. For larger stages, I collaborate with instrumentalists and vocalists to create a jugalbandi that balances the rhythmic foundation (Theka) with energetic exchanges of 'sawal-jawab' (call and response).
I have been fortunate to perform in varied settings, from the acoustic precision of the Kamani Auditorium to the warmth of living room baithaks. Before every event, I dedicate time to sound checks and tuning to ensure the dayan clarity and bayan depth are balanced for your space. My attire remains traditional, reflecting the solemnity and respect I hold for the music.
