My Staff Dance Diary: Personal Flow Expressions
Spinning isn't just about the tricks. It is about how the weight of the staff moves with you. Here is a glimpse into my personal practice, from sunset rooftop flows to Bollywood-inspired dance routines.
Just letting it flow on the rooftop at sunset. This is my meditation, my madness, and my movement. This is what finding your flow feels like.
A little teaser of my ode to Bollywood classics. Combining a saree and staff to the iconic "Kate Nahin Kat Te" is a whole vibe.
I love you! A full version of my Bollywood nostalgia flow, spinning my staff in a saree under the blue sky. This is a challenge, but so rewarding.
Sending it in a saree! This is a clip from my practice, combining the challenge of managing the fabric with the flow of the staff. It's all about having fun.
Tried a fire staff for the first time and I'm hooked! There's nothing like the sound and heat of the flame as you spin. A huge thank you to the community for sharing their props and knowledge.
Midnight shenanigans with my LED staff. When the lights go out, the flow glows. It's a completely different experience dancing in the dark.
A little practice session with my LED staff at home. The light trails create such beautiful patterns, turning a simple spin into a light show.
A powerful moment from a performance at the Bangalore Creative Circus. Flow arts isn't just about tricks, it's about channeling emotion and energy for an audience.
Technofire is ready to set your heart on fire. A clip from my performance at the Christmas Flow Carnival, a truly amazing event.
Part two of my performance at the Christmas Flow Carnival. The energy from the crowd was incredible and really fueled my flow.
About My Staff Dance Diary
Spinning a staff isn't just about looking cool or hitting perfect angles. It is about how the weight of the prop shifts your center of gravity and forces you to stay present. When I practice, I focus entirely on the rhythm of the rotation rather than hitting technical marks. If you are starting out, focus on your grip first. Once your hands learn the movement, your body will naturally follow, even if it feels clunky at first.
This is my personal movement diary. For me, flow arts is a form of active meditation. Whether I am using a weighted staff, LED props, or even just a prop during a Bollywood-inspired routine, the goal is always the same: to find a rhythm that feels honest.
I often practice in open spaces like Cubbon Park or on my terrace, especially when I need to clear my head. My Saree-flow videos are a personal favorite, proving that you can mix traditional movement with modern flow arts techniques. If you are based in Bangalore and feeling curious, you do not need to be a professional dancer to start.
My sessions focus on:
- Somatic Movement: Connecting your breath to your physical flow.
- Basic Grips & Planes: The foundation of every trick you see in these videos.
- Mindful Practice: Learning to laugh at yourself when you drop the prop. Because we all drop it. That is part of the fun.
Flow arts helps with hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness, but more importantly, it helps you get out of your own head. If you want to stop overthinking and start moving, come join a session. We prioritize good vibes over rigid structure.
Ayesha
I am Ayesha, and I started spinning because I needed a way to move when dance felt impossible. Now, my staff is my meditation. I teach, I perform, and I love helping others find that same sense of freedom in their own bodies.
