Exploring Poi, Fire Fans, and Dapostar
While the hoop is my foundation, my curiosity often wanders to the physics of poi, the grace of fire fans, and the rhythm of dapostar. These props offer unique lessons in motion and geometry.
Exploring fire fans for the first time at a fire jam. I love how the knowledge of movement flows between hoops, poi, and fans.
A wholesome Wednesday spinning scarf poi in the park, where I was visited by an adorable dog who seemed to enjoy the show.
Presenting my latest creation: the "no-mean-feet" weave. A punny name for a poi trick that requires a good amount of coordination and balance.
A goofy, groovy video of me just vibing and dancing with my poi on the terrace, a reminder to not always take practice so seriously.
An AR flow exploration with scarf poi, navigating the feeling of missing out by creating my own visual magic.
Practicing infinite spirals with my sock poi. A meditative session focusing on the continuous, flowing patterns of the poi.
Experimenting with a custom-made gyro hoop, using augmented reality to trace the trippy, rainbow patterns it creates.
About Exploring Poi, Fans & Other Props
Learning a new prop like poi or fans is really about remapping your motor functions. Whether it is the 3-beat weave with poi or isolating movement with fans, you will find that it is less about raw strength and more about understanding the math of the arc and the rhythm of your own body.
When you move from hoop to other props, the fundamental laws of motion stay the same, but the vocabulary changes.
Poi Spinning
At its heart, poi is about understanding tethered weights and how centrifugal force affects your flow. We start with basic planes and timing, moving into weaves and stalls. It is a fantastic way to develop hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness.
Fire Fans
These are all about lines, geometry, and presentation. Unlike the continuous movement of poi, fans often involve static poses and framing your body. It is where dance meets object manipulation.
Dapostar
A fascinating prop for those who love folding patterns and technical flow. It requires a different kind of focus on how the object interacts with your hands and limbs.
The Physics of Flow
I love connecting these props to STEM concepts. Whether we are discussing the topology of a knot in your poi string or the Hopf bifurcation in your spin patterns, my approach is to demystify the technique. You do not need to be a math whiz to join, but you will leave with a better intuitive understanding of how these patterns work.
My workshops are held at my studio in Koramangala and during residential farm retreats. We keep the groups small because I want to give you real-time feedback on your plane control and posture. You will mess up, you will drop your props, and we will laugh about it together. That is how the learning happens.
