Poi Spinning: From Basics to Fire
Flow arts is about finding focus in movement. Whether you want to master contact poi or eventually spin fire, we start simple with practice props right here in Bengaluru.
Spinning fire poi on a dark beach is an intense experience. The sound and heat of the flames add a powerful element to the flow. Safety is always the first priority when we get to this level.
This is a long exposure photo of a fire poi pattern called a triquetra. It shows how you can create beautiful light trails and shapes in the air with precise movements.
A quick clip of me practicing with contact poi on a rooftop. Unlike regular poi, these are designed for rolls and stalls on the body, mixing elements of contact staff with poi spinning.
A freestyle poi session with a dramatic cloudy sky as the backdrop. Flow arts is about connecting with your environment, whether you're in a studio or out in nature.
Finding my balance and flow with practice poi on the sand. The beach is the perfect place to practice without worrying about dropping your props.
A simple moment of practice on a cloudy day at the beach. Even basic poi spinning is a great form of active meditation, helping to clear the mind.
About Poi Spinning: From Basics to Fire
We focus on biomechanics and grip techniques first, not just flashy moves. My sessions start with practice poi or contact props to build your wrist mobility and plane control, ensuring you have the muscle memory down before we ever talk about fire.
Most people think poi is just swinging strings in the air, but it is actually a discipline of geometry and rhythm. My sessions in Bengaluru are designed to demystify the learning curve. If you have ever felt clumsy or rhythm-challenged, this is the exact place to start.
We break the process down into manageable chunks:
- Foundations: We begin with wrist mobility and grip techniques to prevent wrist strain.
- Plane Control: This is the secret to clean visuals. We work on maintaining straight lines and perfect circles, which makes your flow look intentional rather than chaotic.
- Trick Vocabulary: You will learn the classic moves like the 3-beat weave, butterfly, and halo, which form the base for almost every advanced sequence.
- The Transition: Once your muscle memory is solid, we move from practice sets to contact poi. This changes the physics, allowing you to roll the prop over your body, similar to contact staff techniques.
Regarding fire: It is a privilege, not a requirement. I only introduce fire spinning once you have mastered your planes and safety drills. It adds heat and light to the movement, but the focus remains on your state of flow. Whether you are in it for a full-body workout or just to clear your head after a week of coding, we find the rhythm together.
