The Music of Capoeira: Learn Berimbau and Traditional Rhythms
Capoeira is more than just kicks and cartwheels. It is a conversation fueled by rhythm, song, and the ancient sound of the Berimbau. Join us to learn the music that gives our Roda its life and energy.
You don't need anything but your body to practice Capoeira, but the music is what gives it life. Here, a student practices the Berimbau, a single-string instrument that is the heart of the Capoeira orchestra.
A student holds a Berimbau, getting ready to play. Learning the music is just as important as learning the movements, and we guide everyone, even absolute beginners.
Another look at a student with a Berimbau. In the background, you can see the reflection of another student practicing an acrobatic move, showing how music and movement are always connected in our classes.

More music from our Batizado. The room is filled with the sound of instruments and voices, creating the powerful Axé that drives the games.

A student receives a Berimbau as a gift. This instrument is more than just wood and wire; it's a connection to the history and soul of Capoeira.
About The Music of Capoeira
When you play a Berimbau, you are not just holding a single-string bow; you are learning to lead the entire Roda. It is the instrument that tells the game when to speed up, slow down, or intensify. We do not just teach you the notes—we teach you how to feel the rhythm and sing the traditional Portuguese songs that have kept this culture alive for centuries.
In our Capoeira community, the music is not just background noise; it is the driver of everything we do. The bateria (orchestra) dictates the energy, speed, and style of the game inside the Roda.
The Instruments We Teach
You will get hands-on experience with the core instruments of the Afro-Brazilian tradition:
- Berimbau: The soul of Capoeira. It is a single-string bow instrument that dictates the rhythm. We teach you how to hold it, strike it, and use the dobrão (coin) to change the pitch.
- Pandeiro: The tambourine that adds the jingle and keeps the pulse steady.
- Atabaque: The tall drum that provides the deep, grounding bass beat.
Why It Matters
If you have watched a Roda, you know the players move in sync with the music. When the Berimbau changes, the gameplay changes. It is a real-time conversation. Learning the music helps you understand the Ginga (base step) and why we move the way we do.
We also teach the traditional Portuguese songs. These are not just lyrics; they are stories of history, struggle, and joy. You do not need to know Portuguese or have a background in music to start. Whether you are training in Mumbai at Juhu or visiting our studios in Bengaluru, we keep the learning process simple, repetitive, and deeply communal. It is about feeling the Axé (energy) and connecting with the people around you.
Capoeira Academy
I am Ravi, and I have been living and breathing Capoeira since I was 14. For me, the music is where the real connection happens. I love helping students move past the self-doubt and finally get into the groove of the Roda.
