About Acrobatics & Skill Development
You do not need to be a gymnast to start. Most people who walk into my class think they need core strength before they can try a cartwheel, but we actually teach you the foundational movements like the ginga first. It is less about forcing your body into a shape and more about learning how to fall, balance, and play with your own weight, often using wall drills or partner support before you even attempt a floor flip.
Building Skills the Capoeira Way
When people see Capoeira, they usually notice the flips and the speed. But those acrobatic skills are built on a bedrock of body awareness, safety, and steady progression. In my sessions, we strip away the intimidation factor. We don't just throw you into a sequence; we break every move down into its basic components. Whether it is the au (cartwheel) or the macaco (a grounded flip), we focus on the mechanics of the movement first.
Overcoming the Fear of Being Upside Down
A large part of our skill development work is mental. Going upside down is not natural for everyone. We use specific drills, like utilizing wall space for handstand practice or having partners spot each other, to make the process safe and controlled. You will learn to fall safely before you ever need to worry about landing a big move. This approach builds confidence that transfers far beyond the training mat.
Why Our Approach Works
- Foundation First: We prioritize movement quality over flashy tricks.
- Safety Priority: Training is conducted on appropriate surfaces like Tatami mats to protect your joints.
- Personalized Pace: Every student learns differently. I adjust the intensity of the acrobatic drills to match your current level, whether you are a total beginner or an experienced mover looking to add flair to your game.
- Community Support: You are never training alone. In our Roda (circle), we support each other's progress. Seeing a fellow student nail their first cartwheel is often the best motivation to keep pushing your own boundaries.
Whether you are joining me at the Shaolin Temple in Juhu or Namma Nook in Bengaluru, the goal remains the same: move better, get stronger, and have fun doing it.
Capoeira Academy
I have been living and breathing Capoeira since I was 14. For me, it is never about hitting a perfect move on the first try, it is about the journey of finding your flow and learning to trust your body. My classes are chaotic, fun, and designed to help you surprise yourself.
