Tabla Training and Hindustani Classical Music
We preserve the traditional Guru-Shishya parampara in the heart of Koramangala. Explore our scholarly approach to rhythm, from foundational tabla lessons to the disciplined practice of daily riyaz.
This is a look inside our tabla classroom where students are engaged in group riyaaz under the guidance of Guru Shri Ashwin M P. Here, they are practicing a 'gat' composition, focusing on synchronizing their 'bols' and maintaining a steady 'laya' or tempo, a fundamental aspect of our rhythm training.
We present a moment from our 'Baithak Series' where our student Anushri performs a devotional bhajan. This showcases the culmination of dedicated practice, where the tabla provides rhythmic support not just as a percussion instrument, but as a complementary voice to the vocal performance.
Our Guru, Shri Ashwin M P, provides an introduction to the nuanced world of 'taal'. In this video, he explains the structural differences between Sultaal and Chautaal, demonstrating the 'bols' and 'matras' of each. This reflects our educational approach to Hindustani shastriya sangeet.
True musical growth happens in the quiet hours of 'riyaaz'. This video captures a candid practice session where our tabla guru, Shri Ashwiniji, accompanies a senior vocal student, guiding him through complex rhythmic cycles and pushing him to refine his performance.
To master the tabla, one must first understand the language of 'taal'. This chart outlines the fundamental elements of rhythm in Hindustani classical music, including concepts like 'laya' (tempo), 'maatra' (beat), 'sam' (the first beat), and 'khali' (the empty beat).
Here, our younger students present a 'vilambit bandish' in Raag Brindavani Sarang, accompanied by live tabla. This demonstrates how we introduce students to the art of accompaniment early in their journey, teaching them to synchronize with a vocalist and maintain the rhythmic structure of a composition.
We believe in showcasing the art form on stage. This is from a musical evening where our Guru Shri Ashwin MP performed, demonstrating his mastery of 'layakari' on the tabla. Our students are inspired by seeing their guru as a practicing and performing artist.
About Featured
We conduct all training in our Koramangala studio using traditional Baithak floor seating to replicate the authentic environment of a classical performance. With batch sizes strictly limited to 4-8 students, you receive consistent guidance from Guru Shri Ashwin M P on every bol, laya, and matra, ensuring that the theoretical structure of your taal remains precise from your very first session.
The Discipline of Our Rhythm Training
At Sangeet Sadhana, we approach the tabla as a living language. Our curriculum moves beyond mere mechanical practice, grounding students in the grammatical framework of the taal system. Whether you are learning simple thekas or complex layakari, the focus is on understanding the 'why' behind every composition.
Why Our Guru-Shishya Parampara Matters
Music is a sadhana, and we believe it requires a direct, personal transmission of knowledge. By limiting our groups, we ensure that students do not just mimic the Guru but understand the subtle nuances of pressure, hand positioning, and the atmospheric mood of the raag.
What You Will Learn
Our progression is structured to provide a comprehensive education in Hindustani shastriya sangeet:
- Foundation: Mastering bol (syllables), laya (tempo), and matra (beats).
- Taal System: Deep dive into the structural differences between taals like Teentaal, Sultal, and Chautal.
- Accompaniment: Learning the art of sangat—supporting vocalists and instrumentalists with steady, responsive rhythm.
- Performance: Regular opportunities to perform in our Baithak series, where students apply their practice in a live, communal setting.
Our Approach to Riyaz
We emphasize that the magic of music happens in the quiet, unapplauded hours of riyaz. Our students are encouraged to develop a consistent practice routine, supported by our resources on the history and mythology behind the ragas. This is not just a hobby class; it is a commitment to the preservation of our rich musical heritage.
