The Science of Yoga: Anatomy & Biomechanics

Yoga is a precise science of the human body. Here, we move beyond basic stretching to understand the biomechanics of every movement, ensuring your practice is restorative, safe, and anatomically sound.

To unlock the secrets of your body, you must study its map. My teaching is rooted in a thorough understanding of anatomy, allowing me to guide you through poses in a way that is both safe and profoundly transformative.

A yoga teacher must understand anatomy. Knowing how muscles and joints work allows me to guide students more effectively, prevent injuries, and blend ancient yogic wisdom with modern biomechanics for a truly holistic approach.

Gym training and yoga have different effects on the nervous system. I explain the science behind how yoga activates the 'rest and digest' parasympathetic system, reducing stress hormones and improving heart rate variability, as confirmed by modern research.

The biomechanics of the feet are crucial for overall health. I teach exercises to correct issues like collapsed arches or over-supination, strengthening the foundation of your body to improve balance and posture.

The 'tripod of the foot' is a key biomechanical concept for stability. By learning to distribute your weight correctly across these three points, you can improve your balance, prevent injuries, and enhance your entire yoga practice.

About this collection

In my studio, we do not guess your body's needs; we map them. Before starting, I perform a postural assessment to identify muscle imbalances or misalignments. If you struggle with back pain or sciatica, we use Iyengar-style props like wall ropes and blocks to decompress the spine safely, ensuring your practice addresses the root cause of your discomfort rather than just the symptoms.

True healing begins when you understand the why behind every posture. Many practitioners view asanas as simple fitness routines, but when we look at the body through the lens of anatomy, using skeleton models for reference, we transform the way we move. My approach is rooted in understanding how bones, joints, and muscles interact. For instance, the tripod of the foot is a fundamental concept I teach to improve balance and prevent common issues like plantar fasciitis. By distributing weight correctly across the heel, base of the big toe, and little toe, we create a stable foundation for the entire body.

Furthermore, I emphasize the distinction between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system engagement. While gym-based training often activates fight or flight modes, my therapeutic sessions focus on rest and digest protocols to lower cortisol levels and stimulate the vagus nerve. Whether we are correcting a kyphotic posture or using ropes for spinal traction, every movement is designed to align aahar (nutrition), vihaar (lifestyle), and vichar (thoughts). You are not just doing yoga; you are retraining your body and mind for sustainable health.
