Why Value and Layering Matter

Value—the lightness or darkness of a color—is what gives an object its 3D form. Without understanding how to shift from light to dark using pencil pressure, drawings often look flat. We make this simple. You do not need expensive tools to start, just the understanding of how much pressure to apply to get the result you want.

Layering is just as important. It is how you build rich, deep colors without making the paper messy or overworked. We teach you how to build up light layers to create a smooth, blended effect. This technique is particularly useful in our mixed media, colored pencil, and acrylic workshops.
