Getting Started: Your First Steps in Yoga

Taking your first steps on the mat can feel new, but you do not need to be flexible or young to begin. My approach focuses on simple, safe movements that fit into your life, ensuring you build a sustainable practice at your own pace.

This is the classic tale of every new yoga student, from initial nervousness to feeling relaxed and energized after the first session. It's a reminder that yoga is for everyone, and taking that first step is the most important part of the journey.

Here are five essential tips for yoga beginners. I emphasize starting slowly, focusing on your breath, listening to your body, staying consistent, and being patient and kind to yourself as you begin this transformative practice.

Even with a busy schedule, you can start a yoga practice. I share quick tips like choosing a convenient time, starting with short 5-10 minute sessions, and selecting simple poses to help you build a consistent and manageable routine.

Proper preparation sets the stage for a mindful practice. I outline key things to consider before you start, such as finding a clean and quiet space, practicing on a light stomach, and wearing comfortable clothing to ensure your session is focused and effective.

To ensure a safe and effective session, here are some essential guidelines to follow during your practice. I explain the importance of listening to your body, modifying poses as needed, maintaining proper alignment, and breathing correctly through each movement.

How you conclude your practice is just as important as how you begin. I share key steps for after your session, including ending with Shavasana to release fatigue, hydrating properly, and reflecting on your practice to absorb its full benefits.

A balanced yoga practice has a clear beginning and end. I show how to start your session with intention and mindfulness, and how to close with deep relaxation in Shavasana, gratitude, and palming to seal in the peace you've cultivated.

About this collection

Many beginners believe they need to be flexible before they start, but that is a myth. In my sessions, we focus on Sukshma Vyayama, which are gentle joint movements, and the use of props like blocks or belts to ensure every posture is accessible, regardless of your current range of motion.

Starting yoga is not about reaching a specific pose; it is about building a relationship with your body. Whether you are joining me online or in-person in Bengaluru, the first step is creating a space that works for you. I recommend finding a quiet, well-ventilated area where you can practice without distraction. Remember that consistency matters more than intensity. Even 10 to 15 minutes of regular practice is more effective than an occasional hour-long session.

When we work together, we always start by setting a Sankalpa, or intention, which helps ground your practice beyond the physical movements. Safety is my priority. If you are new to yoga or managing health conditions like hypertension, back pain, or stiffness, please consult your doctor first.

My role as your teacher is to provide modifications and manual adjustments—for my in-person Bengaluru clients—to ensure your alignment is correct and your joints are protected. You do not need expensive gear to start. A simple mat, comfortable cotton clothing, and a willingness to listen to your body are all you need to begin this journey.
