About Flexibility & Deep Stretching
When we focus on deep stretching, it is not just about touching your toes. It is about accessing the places where you hold onto stress, especially the hips and shoulders. In my sessions, we focus on gentle, supported holds that help you slowly release that tension. It is rarely comfortable in the moment, but that lightness you feel afterward? That is the real goal.
Stretching is my way of listening to what the body is trying to say. We live in a city like Delhi where everything is fast, and our bodies reflect that by tightening up. My practice is designed to slow that down.
Why focus on flexibility?
In my experience, you cannot move into a meditative state if your body is screaming at you. We need to clear the path first. I work a lot on hip openers and spine lengthening because these areas are where we store our day-to-day stress. When we hold a pose like a deep lunge or a wall-assisted backbend, we are not just stretching muscle fibers; we are giving our nervous system permission to downshift.
What to expect in a session
Whether you join me at my Chattarpur studio or we work together online, the process is the same. We start by centering ourselves. I don't believe in forcing the body. If you have tight hamstrings or a stiff lower back, we use props like chairs or wall supports to make the stretch accessible. The goal is to move safely into the pose, breathe into the discomfort, and then let it go.
I often remind my students: 'Apne tail bone pe dhyan do' (pay attention to your tailbone). It is about the subtle alignment that changes a good stretch into a deep release. We will work on:
- Opening the hip space to release emotional fatigue.
- Lengthening the spine to improve posture and energy flow.
- Strengthening the neck and upper back to counteract screen fatigue.
This is not a race to reach the floor. It is a slow, steady journey to make your body feel like a home you actually want to live in.
