Advanced Yoga Poses & Strength Drills
Moving beyond the basics? Here are the drills and refinements to help you build the strength, stability, and control needed for inversions, arm balances, and backbends, safely.
Ready to work on your Shirshasana (Headstand)? This tutorial breaks down the steps to move in and out of the pose safely, emphasizing core engagement and control. This is for those already comfortable with preparatory poses.
Let's learn Bakasana (Crow Pose) using a block. This tutorial shows how elevating your feet can help you find the right weight distribution and build the confidence to lift off.
Drills to build strength and stability for Chaturanga Dandasana. Practicing plank variations and slow descents will improve your shoulder and core strength, making your flow smoother and safer.
Believe it or not, Chaturanga is an actual pose, not just a transition! Holding it properly strengthens your core and prepares you for arm balances. Stop rushing through it.
This is your sign to incorporate Uddiyan Bandha into your practice. This abdominal lock tones the visceral organs, strengthens digestion, and directs prana upward through the sushumna nadi.
If you've mastered the front split (Hanumanasana), here are some fun variations to try. This video explores adding twists and backbends to deepen the stretch and challenge your balance.
Another look at front split variations. This time, we explore different arm positions and transitions to build more flexibility and control in this advanced posture.
Exploring more advanced variations from a standing split, including binding and deepening the forward fold. These movements require significant flexibility and balance.
Once you can do the front split, you can play with different entries and exits. This clip shows a dynamic entry into the pose, focusing on control and fluidity.
A moment of balance in Adho Mukha Vrksasana (Handstand). This inversion is a journey of building strength, overcoming fear, and finding a moment of stillness while upside down.
About Deepening Your Practice: Advanced Poses & Drills
When we practice advanced asanas like Shirshasana or Chakrasana, I never ask you to just jump into them. We use preparatory drills like scapula push-ups for Chaturanga or wall-assisted inversions because the goal is structural integrity, not just the final pose. If you rush the foundation, you miss the benefit of the pose and risk injury.
Advanced practice is often misunderstood as simply doing 'harder' poses. In my classes, we treat advanced asana like a puzzle to be solved with stability, not just flexibility. Whether you are working toward your first Bakasana (Crow Pose) or refining your transition into a full backbend, the process remains the same: we build the strength first.
Why Drills Matter
Many students struggle with poses not because they lack range of motion, but because they lack the muscular engagement to support it. I dedicate time in our sessions to specific drills—like plank variations for Chaturanga or wall-work for handstands—to train your muscles for the final movement. This approach makes the practice sustainable and, most importantly, safe.
My Approach to Advanced Asana
- Inversions: We prioritize neck safety and core strength before ever taking the feet off the floor. I guide you through wall-assisted entries so you can overcome fear and build endurance.
- Arm Balances: We focus on weight distribution and drishti (gaze), ensuring you aren't just muscling through the pose but finding the balance point.
- Backbends: These require a balance of spinal mobility and leg strength. We work on opening the thoracic spine rather than dumping pressure into the lower back.
If you have been practicing for a while but feel stuck at a plateau, I offer 1:1 sessions. We will break down your alignment, identify where you are compensating, and create a targeted plan to help you progress without the risk of injury.
