No musical background? No problem. Join our monthly drum circles to de-stress, connect with new people, and create music in the moment. Instruments are provided—all you need to bring is your energy.

Here are the details for our June community drum circle and workshop. We start with a short lesson on a West African rhythm, then open it up for two hours of group music making.

The energy is building at our community drum circle at Pune Handmade Papers. People of all ages and backgrounds come together, find a drum, and join the rhythm.

A quick look at one of our drum circles in action. You can see a diverse group of people, each with a djembe, finding a common beat together in a relaxed, outdoor setting.

A snapshot from our last community drum circle of 2023. The motion blur on the hands captures the energy and speed of the rhythm we created together.

Connection is at the heart of what we do. Here I am having a one-on-one chat during a break in our community drum circle, sharing the joy of rhythm.

This was our Christmas community drum circle, the last session of the year. It was a wonderful gathering of friends, old and new, sharing some festive rhythm.

A glimpse of our community drum circle, where the focus is on therapeutic and recreational drumming. It's not a class, but a space to unwind and connect through rhythm.

About this collection

These circles aren't about perfecting technique or getting every note right. It is a space to de-stress and connect. We provide the drums, so you just need to walk in, grab a seat, and follow the group flow. It is the perfect way to spend a weekend morning without the pressure of a structured class.

What to Expect

Our community drum circles at Pune Handmade Papers are designed to be entirely recreational. You do not need to be a musician to participate. We believe that if you can hear the beat, you can play it. The sessions are informal, welcoming, and open to anyone from age 8 to 81.

The Format

We typically split our gathering into two distinct segments. First, we run a short Intro Djembe Workshop to help you get comfortable with the basic sounds (bass, tone, and slap). This sets the foundation. After that, we move into the main drum circle, where the focus shifts to improvisational music making and group connection.

Why Join?

  • No Gear Needed: We provide the synthetic djembes for the duration of the session.
  • Connect with Others: It is a diverse group of people from all over Pune, making it a great space to meet new friends.
  • De-stress: Drumming is a meditation in motion. It helps you turn off the conscious mind and just be in the rhythm.

We often operate on a gift economy principle for these sessions, allowing you to contribute what you feel is appropriate for the experience. Whether you are coming to blow off some steam after a long work week or just want to try something new, you will leave feeling lighter. Anta! (Let's go!)
