Give your child a space to release energy, make friends, and learn a new instrument. We use stories and games to teach traditional West African Djembe rhythms in a way that is fun and easy to follow.

"If you can say it, you can play it" works wonders with kids. This video shows how we turn simple vocal phrases into cool rhythms, making learning feel like a game.

Here I am teaching the song for 'Moribayassa', a rhythm of pure happiness. The kids pick up the West African song and the beat with so much joy and enthusiasm.

This is 8-year-old Riaan, a dedicated student, explaining the history of the 'Fankani' rhythm before we play it together. His understanding of the culture behind the music is truly inspiring.

I'm personally inviting all kids to our Summer Drummer Camp. We'll explore the Djembe through games, stories, and new rhythms. It's a great way to have fun and learn an instrument.

Meet 10-year-old Kabir, who has been studying with me since seeing our ensemble perform. He has already passed multiple levels of the TTMDA curriculum, showing incredible dedication and talent.

About this collection

Our teaching philosophy is simple: if you can say it, you can play it. Your child will not just hit a drum, but learn to vocalize rhythms, understand the cultural story behind them, and play in a group. We provide all the junior-sized Djembes, so you just need to bring them along to the studio.

Drumming is much more than hitting a surface. For children, it is a way to develop motor skills, active listening, and social connection while having a blast. At Taal Inc, we focus on the Djembe, a traditional West African goblet drum, bringing the pedagogical methods of the late Grandmaster Mamady Keïta to classrooms in Pune.

How We Teach

We move away from rigid music theory and focus on vocal patterns. By learning to say a rhythm, students internalize the beat before their hands even touch the drum. This approach removes the intimidation factor for beginners. Kids learn:

  • Traditional West African rhythms and their cultural history.
  • Group dynamics, playing in unison, and rhythm ensemble skills.
  • Motor coordination through drumming games and storytelling.

Practical Details

  • Age Group: Sessions are designed for children between 4 and 12 years old.
  • Gear: You do not need to purchase an instrument. We provide junior-sized Djembes for every participant, ensuring proper ergonomics and comfort during the session.
  • Approach: Every class is a standalone experience filled with 'masti' (fun) and 'josh' (enthusiasm). We keep the group sizes small to ensure each child gets proper attention from the instructor.

Whether your child has musical experience or is completely new to percussion, they will find a space here to express themselves. We believe that rhythm is a universal language, and our goal is to help your child find their own beat in a supportive environment.
