I specialize in transforming ancestral properties into timeless, functional homes while preserving the distinct character and history that make them unique.

A glimpse into the family home of Sri Veerendra Hegde ji in Mangalore during a ceremony. The design features a double-height space with a coffer slab ceiling, traditional wooden railings, and a large, patterned rug.

A behind-the-scenes look at the Mangalore family home project, showing the intricate details of the arched doorway with stained glass and carved wooden doors. This was a dream project with a lot of experimentation.

A tour of the VIP Guest House I renovated for the Institute of Dharmasthala. It was an honor to design a space that hosts eminent personalities, and the design reflects a sense of timeless luxury and comfort.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to design the architecture and interiors for this family home in Mangalore. It has been a humbling experience with immense learning and experimentation.

About this collection

When approaching a heritage restoration, the primary challenge is often reconciling outdated floor plans with modern living requirements. For the family home in Mangalore, we moved beyond superficial updates, opting for a structural realignment. This allowed us to introduce a double-height central space that invites natural light and ventilation, preserving the property's character while significantly improving daily functionality.

Our Approach to Heritage Design

Designing within the context of heritage properties requires a deep respect for existing architectural elements alongside a clear understanding of modern needs. My process begins with an extensive site analysis to identify what should be preserved—such as original woodwork or spatial proportions—and what needs to be adapted for contemporary use.

Structural Integrity and Reimagining Space

In projects like the VIP Guest House for the Institute of Dharmasthala, the goal was to provide high-end comfort for eminent personalities without erasing the site's historical significance. We focus on:

  • Spatial Flow: Rethinking partition walls to create open, airy layouts that support current lifestyle demands.
  • Material Honesty: Prioritizing the use of traditional materials like Kota stone, solid wood, and lime plaster to maintain an authentic aesthetic.
  • Lighting and Ventilation: Integrating modern lighting solutions—like magnetic tracks or recessed architectural lights—with natural light sources to enhance the atmosphere of the room.

Balancing Tradition with Utility

Every project is different. Sometimes, this means installing modern HVAC and data networking behind heritage facades. Other times, it involves creating custom cabinetry and furniture that complements the existing architecture rather than competing with it. Whether renovating a multi-generational family home or a public guesthouse, the objective remains the same: to create a space that feels like a natural evolution of its history.

If you are considering a renovation for a heritage property, we should discuss the scope of structural work required. My practice is equipped to handle comprehensive overhauls, ensuring that your home feels as comfortable as it is meaningful.
