Rooted Japandi Home Transformations
We transformed this 40-year-old apartment by replacing heavy partitions with an open layout. This project blends Japanese minimalism with warm, traditional Indian textures to create a home that feels light and deeply comfortable.

A video showing the dramatic transformation of the dining and family lounge. By swapping the functions of the two spaces, I created a more open and connected plan that feels both cozy and spacious.
A before-and-after look at the kitchen renovation in the Japandi home. The gloomy, cramped space was completely reimagined into a large, functional, and beautiful kitchen, becoming the true hearth of the home.
The formal living space, designed with a neutral and earthy palette. An organically shaped marble and wood table sits on a jute rug, complemented by off-white sofas and a sleek rattan console.
A curio of a bird made from broken mosaic pieces, which I incorporated into the design. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the Japanese philosophy of 'Kintsugi', finding beauty in imperfection.
This video showcases the smart, rotatable wood and rattan partition I designed to separate the living and dining areas. The pivots allow the user to control the level of privacy, adding a unique and functional accent.

About this collection
We started by swapping the locations of the kitchen and the family lounge to improve natural light and movement. This move immediately made the apartment feel spacious, replacing the previous cramped corridors with an airy, unified living area. We retained the family's original dining table, updating it with a new quartz top and height adjustments to bridge the gap between their history and modern living.
Japandi design relies on the balance between Japanese simplicity and Scandinavian comfort, but in an Indian context, it requires an extra layer of warmth. For this project in Bengaluru, we worked within an existing 2,000 sq ft shell that had become cluttered over 40 years. Our approach was subtractive. We removed non-structural walls to restore flow, allowing light to travel freely from the windows into the heart of the home. Materials played a critical role. We selected Kota stone and rattan to ground the space, while subtle touches like the mosaic bird, inspired by the Kintsugi philosophy, remind residents that repairing the old can yield beauty. We maintained the kitchen connection to the family lounge using a wood and glass bifold window, ensuring the space remains social. Every detail, from the rotatable partitions to the bamboo lighting, serves a practical purpose while adhering to a neutral, earthy palette. Our goal with this home was to prove that you do not need a new build to achieve a calm, decluttered sanctuary. We simply stripped back the layers to reveal the home potential.
