Foundation in Clay for Architecture Students
I love returning to my alma mater, V.E.S., to share the joy of clay with architecture students. It is about feeling the material, understanding structure, and growing together through hands-on practice.
A beautiful moment of collaboration during a workshop for architecture students. I love seeing students step up to help each other and work as a team throughout the creative process.
A happy, clay-covered group shot after a fulfilling workshop. It is a privilege to return to my alma mater, V.E.S., to teach the next generation about the fundamentals of working with clay.
About Foundation in Clay for Students
When architecture students walk into the studio, we leave the drafting tables behind and go straight to the tactile reality of clay. You will be wedging material and exploring structural forms by hand, which is often a needed break from screens. These sessions typically run for 3 hours, and since we accommodate groups of up to 25, the energy in the room is high, collaborative, and focused on learning from each other as much as the process.
Understanding Clay as a Material
For an architect, understanding the material is half the battle. In these workshops, we skip the abstract theory and focus on what clay can actually do. You will learn the basics of clay preparation, wedging, and hand-building techniques like pinching and coiling. These are fundamental skills that translate directly into a better understanding of structure and form, regardless of whether you are designing buildings or ceramic pots.
Why Architecture Students
Returning to V.E.S. and working with students from various colleges is one of my favorite things. I have seen how the creative block that hits on a computer screen vanishes when your hands are covered in mud. The goal here is a digital detox combined with a masterclass in patience and resilience. Sometimes a piece collapses, and that is where the real lesson starts.
