Slow down and shape your own functional art. Discover the tactile joy of hand-building clay without the wheel.

Our "Make Your Own Mug" workshop is a great place to start your pottery journey. This poster captures a moment of focus as a participant sculpts a face onto their hand-pinched mug.

A student carefully adds a textured leaf appliqué to her hand-built mug. This surface decoration technique allows for intricate and personal designs.

In our studio, you'll find all the tools you need. Here, a participant uses a banding wheel to work on her charming, hand-sculpted cat-themed mug.

Hand-building isn't just for pots and mugs. This student is sculpting a small, expressive face, showing how you can use clay to create unique art pieces.

This video shows the process of creating personalized ceramic trays, from rolling out the clay slab to hand-painting a message before the piece is glazed and fired.

From shaping the initial form to the final glazed product, this video shows the evolution of a hand-built mug, complete with delicate, handmade cherry blossoms.

Creating memories and art. Our workshops are a great way for couples and friends to spend a weekend, shaping their imagination into tangible objects.

About Hand-Building: Mugs, Trays & More

Hand-building is a tactile, slow process that prioritizes form over speed. When you join this workshop, you shape your piece from scratch using pinching or coiling techniques, but the clay requires a journey after the session ends. Because every mug must be dried, bisque-fired, and professionally glazed, your finished, food-safe creation will be ready for pickup or shipping in two to four weeks.

At Studio White & Gray, we strip pottery back to its most basic elements. You do not need a wheel to create something beautiful. Hand-building techniques like pinching and slab-work allow you to feel the density of the clay and understand its limits without the pressure of a spinning wheel. This is where you make personalized functional ware, such as coffee mugs, trinket dishes, or serving trays, that carry the unique impressions of your hands.

Our Byculla studio provides the space to disconnect from the city rush and focus on this discipline. Whether you are a beginner curious about clay or someone looking to refine your surface decoration, these sessions are designed to be accessible. We provide all the tools, aprons, and guidance you need. We handle the technical heavy lifting, including the careful process of drying, glazing, and firing. Just bring your patience, as the nature of ceramics requires us to respect the drying time before your work is ready for your kitchen shelf.

I am Sandeep, and this studio is my way of sharing the discipline of clay. We built this space in the Byculla mill compound for anyone who wants to slow down and use their hands for more than just typing. Come for the clay, stay for the quiet.
