About this collection

In our hand-building sessions, we focus heavily on the structural integrity of your pieces from day one. One of the first lessons involves checking your wall thickness to prevent cracks during firing, a crucial, hands-on step that ensures your hand-built mugs and bowls survive the kiln intact and last for years.

At ArtVilla Academy, we believe that pottery is not just about perfect symmetry—it is about the freedom to create with your own two hands. Hand-building is arguably the most intimate way to work with clay, whether you are a beginner picking up a lump of mud for the first time or an advanced student looking to sculpt intricate forms.

Why Hand-Building?

Unlike the wheel, which requires mastering centrifugal force and speed, hand-building invites you to slow down. We teach three primary methods:

  • Pinching: This is the most intuitive starting point, where you shape clay by pressing and turning it to create uniform wall thickness.
  • Coiling: Using long 'snakes' of clay, we build height, allowing you to create larger vessels like vases and pitchers without the limits of the wheel.
  • Slab-Building: We roll out sheets of clay to construct sharp-edged forms like mugs, boxes, and home decor items. This is perfect for those who want to integrate geometric shapes into their art.

Our Studio Approach

Located in Kandivali and Borivali, our studio is built for the community. We provide the tools—aprons, carving implements, and wire cutters—so you only need to bring your patience and creativity. Because we run our own in-house kiln, we manage the entire process from 'mitti' (raw clay) to the final glaze, ensuring your pieces are fired correctly.

We encourage you to experiment. If a wall is too thick, it cracks. If it is too thin, it collapses. We treat these 'oops' moments as essential lessons in problem-solving. Whether you are crafting a quirky monster-faced mug or a detailed house lantern, we are here to guide you through the process, helping you find your own unique artistic style.
