About A Day in the Life of the Studio
Don't expect a polished, air-conditioned showroom here. When you visit us in our Byculla mill compound, you are stepping into a genuine working space. It gets dusty, the industrial fans are always whirring, and that is precisely the point — we keep it real so you can actually get your hands dirty without worrying about making a mess.
Our Studio Philosophy
We don't believe in perfection from day one. To us, pottery is riyaaz (practice). You will see this in the way we run our studio; it is not about churning out flawless products, but about the process of learning. Whether you are here for a weekend workshop or a long-term membership, you are stepping into a community that values the journey over the result.
What Happens Behind the Scenes
When you see a piece of pottery in our gallery, you are seeing the result of several weeks of work. A typical day in our studio involves:
- Clay Prep: We prepare our own clay bodies to ensure they handle the heat of our kilns properly.
- The Wheel & Hand-Building: You will often find students and professionals working side-by-side, sharing tips on pinching or centering techniques.
- The Glaze Lab: This is where the magic happens. We spend hours experimenting with glazes and loading kilns for the fire.
Visiting the Studio
We are located in an old mill compound in Byculla East. It is a space designed for focus and creativity, away from the typical Mumbai rush. If you are joining us for a class, bring clothes you do not mind getting clay on. We provide the aprons, the tools, and the tea, but you should bring a willingness to be a beginner.
We host everyone from complete novices taking their first 1-hour wheel session to experienced potters participating in our advanced Raku firing masterclasses. Come by to see the kilns being loaded or to catch a guest artist demonstration. This is not just a place to make a mug; it is a place to find a bit of quiet in a loud city.
Studio White & Gray
I am Sandeep, and I built this studio because I was tired of nowhere to go in Mumbai to simply work with clay. This is a space where we treat pottery as 'riyaaz' – a practice that is as much about the mess as it is about the final mug.
