About Artistic Workshops: Painting, Sgraffito & More
If you are worried about messing up a design, do not be. In these workshops, I help you prep your clay base, but the carving and painting is entirely yours. You are not just making a plate, you are etching your own pattern into stoneware, which we then fire and glaze so it is completely food-safe and ready for your dinner table in about three weeks.
If you want to move beyond basic shapes, this is where things get interesting. We go deep into two specific techniques that turn a simple slab of clay into a unique piece of functional art:
Sgraffito: This is where you paint a base layer of slip on your clay and then carve into it. It is satisfying because you are scratching away the top layer to reveal the contrasting color beneath. It is perfect if you have a specific pattern or drawing in mind.
Nerikomi: This Japanese technique involves stacking and rolling colored clay to create marbled or patterned blocks. When you slice through them, you get these intricate, repeating designs that look like they came from a high-end ceramic studio.
The Practical Stuff: These are not drop-in-and-leave sessions. We spend 2.5 to 3 hours together. Everything is included, your stoneware clay, the specialized tools for carving, and the glazing process. Yes, I do the final firing and glazing, so your piece comes out food-safe and durable. You will need to give it about 3 weeks for the full drying and firing cycle before it is ready to come home.
Whether you are looking for a quiet weekend activity or a way to get off your phone and into some texture, this is it. Paani aur mitti se darna nahi hai, the mess is part of the charm.
Studio Hands inClay
Hey, I am Aparnaa. My balcony studio in Ghatkopar is less of a classroom and more of a creative escape. I started this because I believe clay has a way of helping you slow down, or at least helping you make a pretty cool mug while you are at it.
