Modern-Traditional Home Interiors
We believe your home should tell your story. By blending traditional Indian architectural details with clean, contemporary layouts, we create spaces that feel both nostalgic and ready for today's lifestyle.
This dining area pays homage to the client's heritage with traditional wooden columns and a 'katte' bench. A discreet puja unit is hidden behind CNC jali doors, seamlessly integrating spirituality into the design.
Opposite the dining area, a wall features a traditional peacock wallpaper, creating a beautiful focal point. A small console table holds a Krishna idol, blending spiritual elements with modern decor.
The foyer of the 'Kanasu' home sets a nostalgic tone with frames showing life in Mangalore. A vintage-style cabinet with antique handles embodies the harmony of old-world charm and contemporary functionality.
To provide privacy for the open kitchen, I designed this beautiful arched door with stained glass panels. It adds to the home's traditional aesthetic while allowing light to pass through.
A view from the living room, looking through the doorway into the master bedroom. The traditional brass-detailed swing in the foreground beautifully frames the modern, serene bedroom beyond.
Another view of the accent wall, showing how the traditional peacock wallpaper is framed like artwork. The dark wood pillar from the dining area adds another layer of classic architectural detail.
This shot highlights the beautiful stained glass kitchen door, which becomes a decorative element in the dining space. The traditional wallpaper and wooden pillar complete the modern-traditional aesthetic.
A closer look at the custom stained glass door for the kitchen. The geometric pattern in blue and yellow adds a touch of color and artistry, turning a functional door into a feature.
The stained glass kitchen door, seen here slightly ajar, offers a peek into the contemporary kitchen while maintaining the traditional feel of the living and dining areas.
About Modern-Traditional Homes
Integrating traditional elements into a modern apartment layout requires precision, especially when dealing with structural pieces like solid wood columns or 'katte' bench seating. In this project, we balanced these heavy, nostalgic features against a minimalist white backdrop to keep the space feeling open rather than cluttered. The key is in the transition, such as using custom stained glass arch doors to divide areas without blocking natural light.
Our approach to this home began with the name 'Kanasu', which means dream. The goal was to weave the client's Mangalorean roots into a 1400sqft apartment in Bangalore, creating a space that feels personal and grounded.
We focused on materiality to bridge the gap between old and new. The dining area features traditional wooden columns and a custom 'katte' bench, grounding the room in heritage. To ensure these elements didn't overwhelm the space, we used a soft, neutral color palette and simple finishes on the walls, allowing the dark wood and peacock wallpaper to stand out as intentional accents.
Functionality was equally important. The open kitchen, often a challenge in traditional-style layouts, was addressed by designing an arched door with stained glass panels. This provides the necessary partition from the living area while maintaining a sense of openness and adding a layer of artistry. We also integrated a discreet puja unit behind CNC jali doors, ensuring spiritual needs were met without disrupting the aesthetic flow. Every piece, from the vintage-style cabinetry in the foyer to the wardrobe detailing in the master bedroom, was built to serve a purpose while honoring the story of the people who live here.
