Contemporary Indian Homes: Blending Tradition with Modern Design
I design homes that honor our roots while embracing modern living. Explore how I use brick, timber, and traditional elements to create spaces that feel nostalgic yet entirely current.
The traditional wooden 'jula', or swing, is a centerpiece in this home, set against a warm exposed brick wall. It’s a nostalgic element that invites relaxation and conversation.
This view showcases a blend of traditional and modern elements: carved wooden columns, a patterned filler slab ceiling, and an ornate chandelier, all working together in a double-height space.
An exposed brick wall serves as a textured backdrop for the upper floor landing. The wooden niches are designed for displaying art, adding a personal touch to the space.
This staircase in the 'Happy Valley House' was inspired by a piano keyboard. The alternating steps of black granite and white marble create a unique visual rhythm.
The living room of the 'Twin Abode' features a clean, minimalist aesthetic with a double-height ceiling and a large window that floods the space with light. The art on the wall adds a soft, angelic touch.
Detail is everything. Here, I've used panels of woven silk fabric within a door frame, celebrating Indian textiles and adding a layer of texture and craftsmanship to the interior.

About Contemporary Indian Homes
When I design these spaces, I am looking for that friction between the new and the old. You will see it in the Twin Abode project, where a traditional wooden swing is framed by a raw, exposed brick wall. It is not just about aesthetics; it is about creating a rhythm in the space where the texture of the brick balances the smooth, modern lines of the ceiling. This is the conversation I want to have with every home I build: how to keep the soul of Indian design while living in a modern, functional environment.
Architecture in India has always been a response to our climate and our culture. In my work, I lean into this by revisiting materials that have stood the test of time—exposed brick, oxide flooring, and solid wood—but applying them with a contemporary sensibility.
My approach to 'Contemporary Indian Homes' isn't about replicating the past. It is about distilling the elements that make an Indian home feel warm and using them within a structure that prioritizes light, airflow, and clean utility. For instance, in the 'Happy Valley House,' I used a staircase inspired by the rhythm of piano keys, yet placed it within a home that utilizes traditional filler slab ceilings to manage internal temperatures.
The Elements I Work With:
- Materiality: I prefer raw, honest finishes like exposed wire-cut brick or Kota stone. These materials age gracefully and add a tactile quality to the home that paint simply cannot replicate.
- Connection: The 'jula' (swing) is more than furniture; it is a social anchor. In my designs, I carefully place these in transition areas—like the living room or a central foyer—to encourage moments of pause.
- Light and Air: Even in traditional layouts, I integrate modern interventions like central atriums or skylights. This ensures that the interiors remain bright and ventilated, fitting the dense urban context of cities like Bengaluru.
Whether we are integrating a modern kitchen into an open-plan layout or carefully selecting the grain of teak for a door frame, the goal remains the same: a home that doesn't just look good, but feels like an extension of the people living inside it. If you have a site and a vision, I would like to sketch out how these elements might come together for you.
