Our Design Process: From Sketches to Built Stories

Architecture begins at the drafting table, where we explore ideas through sketches and models. We believe in a collaborative, hands-on practice that blurs the lines between art and built space.

A zinc plate etched with architectural details. This is part of my personal design process, where I use printmaking techniques to study form, line, and section. It is a way of thinking through making.

A trial print from an etching plate, showing the translation of a drawing into a new medium. This iterative process of drawing, etching, and printing helps in the development and refinement of design ideas.

At the drafting table, where ideas first take shape. The act of drawing by hand is fundamental to my practice, a direct connection between thought and form.

Etched plates submerged in a ferric chloride bath. This alchemical part of the printmaking process, where acid bites into the metal to create the image, is a powerful metaphor for how ideas are given permanent form.

A close-up of the etching process, applying a protective ground to the zinc plate before drawing. Each step requires patience and precision, much like the practice of architecture itself.

Inspecting an etched plate during the acid bath. This hands-on engagement with materials is crucial for understanding their properties and potential, a knowledge that translates directly into my architectural work.

Guiding a student in the metal etching and printmaking process at a workshop. Sharing these traditional craft techniques is part of my commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of the connection between art and architecture.

About this collection

Design is a tactile journey, not a digital shortcut. We often use printmaking and etching techniques to study the interplay of form, light, and section. This process of making allows us to see how materials will behave in your home or office, ensuring every detail is considered before we ever break ground.

At Mathew and Ghosh Architects, we view the act of drawing as a fundamental connection between thought and physical form. Our studio in Koramangala is more than an office; it is a workshop where we engage with the materiality of our projects. Whether it is a home, a workplace, or a public institution, we approach every design through rigorous architectural drafting and exploratory modeling.

We believe that architecture does not happen in isolation. Our design development process is collaborative, often involving artists, thinkers, and makers to enrich the narrative of a space. We move through various stages, starting with hand-drawn concepts that explore the relationship between the interior and the landscape. This is followed by detailed spatial planning and GFC drawings that ensure technical precision without compromising on the initial vision.

Material research is central to our method. We prefer honest, raw materials like exposed concrete, wood, and stone, often testing their application through small-scale models or etching experiments. We perform shadow and daylight analysis to ensure the furniture positioning and spatial flow enhance your daily life. This careful, iterative approach is how we transform an unrealized idea into a structure that holds memory, purpose, and character.
