Adaptive Reuse & Sustainable Architecture in Bengaluru
True sustainability starts with buildings that already exist. We reimagine old structures to meet the demands of the modern information age, blending historical memory with flexible, light-filled workspaces.
This project involved recovering an old commercial building in Bengaluru and reimagining it for the information age. The process involved stripping the structure to its bones and wrapping it in a new, high-performance facade, creating flexible and light-filled office spaces.
Exploring the Tambekarwada in Vadodara, a historic structure rich with architectural details. Studying heritage buildings like this informs my approach to adaptive reuse, teaching me how to respect the past while designing for the future.
A detail of the wall at Majumdarwada in Vadodara. The textures, materials, and aged patina of old buildings hold stories and a sense of place that I seek to preserve and integrate into my contemporary designs.
About this collection
When we approach an adaptive reuse project, we do not simply renovate. We strip a structure down to its original skeleton, much like we did with the commercial buildings on Brunton Road, to fully understand its potential. This allows us to insert modern infrastructure for natural light and circulation without erasing the history that lives in the walls.
Architecture is rarely about starting from a blank canvas. The most sustainable building is the one that has already been built. Our approach to adaptive reuse focuses on recovering the essence of structures from past decades and re-presenting them for contemporary life.
In Bengaluru, a city that transitioned rapidly from industrial trading to the information technology age, many buildings have been left behind. We specialize in retrofitting these spaces to accommodate modern business needs. This involves creating internal volumes that prioritize transparency, natural light, and the flow of air. By analyzing the structural ancestry of a site, we implement flexible layouts that allow for the ebb and flow of modern business, reducing the need for new construction.
Our process is deeply influenced by the study of heritage structures like the Tambekarwada in Vadodara. We observe how ancient architecture managed ventilation, light, and community movement. We bring these lessons into our sustainable office designs, proving that old wisdom and new technology can coexist. Whether it is a commercial office or a public building, our goal is to retain the spirit of the original while enabling a functional future. We manage civil interventions, detailed spatial layouts, and architectural lighting plans to ensure the result is both historic and highly performative.
Soumitro Ghosh
I am Soumitro Ghosh. For me, design is an act of memory. Whether we are transforming an 80s commercial building in Bengaluru or studying the textures of a heritage wada, we look for the stories already present in the space. It is about keeping what matters and adapting the rest for how we live and work today.
