About Institutional & Educational Spaces
For institutional spaces, we prioritize a 'circulation as classroom' concept. Instead of wasting square footage on empty corridors, we design these transit areas to double as reading nooks and activity zones, ensuring every square foot of your facility serves a specific learning purpose.
Designing for an educational environment requires a departure from standard interior metrics. At SDM Architects, we focus on 'active zoning,' where the built environment directly influences how children interact with their surroundings.
When we worked on the JOY Preschool in Mumbai, our approach was rooted in both safety and spatial efficiency. We replaced standard narrow hallways with multi-use corridors that serve as reading nooks and meeting areas. This approach increases the usable floor area and encourages spontaneous learning.
Our process for institutional projects includes:
- Safety-first execution: We implement rounded structural corners, finger-guard door jambs, and non-toxic, hypoallergenic materials throughout the build.
- Ergonomic zoning: We use distinct color coding to help children navigate their environment independently. Furniture, such as our custom hexagonal tables, is scaled specifically for ages 1.5 to 6 to promote posture and comfort.
- Acoustic control: We incorporate sound-dampening ceiling baffles and wall panels to manage noise levels, ensuring classrooms remain focused environments.
We understand that institutional budget constraints often require high durability. Our designs utilize impact-absorbing flooring like vinyl and cork to prevent injury while ensuring low maintenance. By focusing on these technical details, we create spaces that support both the school administration's operational needs and the developmental requirements of the students.
