We believe in the power of music to build mental strength and provide an outlet for expression. Our vocal music section focuses on learning the skill of `gayan` (singing) while developing a deep sense of rhythm (`taal`).

About Hindustani Vocal: Find Your Voice
We operate on a structured 3-month quarterly curriculum with two sessions per week, designed to build a solid foundation in Swaras and Ragas. Please note that our classes follow the traditional Guru-Shishya style, which involves floor seating and a focused, discipline-oriented environment that encourages deep engagement with the music.
Our Approach to Hindustani Vocal Training
At Sangeet Bharati, learning Hindustani vocal music is a methodical process. We emphasize the Guru-Shishya parampara, a traditional method where direct guidance from a mentor helps you internalize the nuances of Indian classical music. Whether you are a beginner exploring the basics of pitch or an intermediate student refining your technique, our curriculum provides the necessary framework.
The Curriculum
We cover the essential pillars of vocal training:
- Fundamentals: Mastering swaras (notes) and alankaars (patterns) to build tonal clarity.
- Raga Structure: Understanding the melodic frameworks that form the core of Hindustani music.
- Rhythmic Precision: Developing an ear for taal (rhythm) and laya (tempo) in genres like Khayal, Bhajan, and Tarana.
- Voice Training: Exercises focused on breath control, voice modulation, and vocal strength.
The Learning Environment
Located in Mandi House, our facility is designed for focus. We provide harmoniums and tanpuras for in-class practice, ensuring you have the right accompaniment to support your learning. As this is a traditional setting, we follow a floor-seating arrangement, requiring students to remove footwear, which helps maintain the sanctity and discipline of the space.
Performance Opportunities
We believe that theory must be balanced with practice. Students are eligible to audition for our annual stage events, 'Sarvaang' and 'Taranga'. These performances on the rangmanch offer students real-world experience, helping them manage stage nerves and gain confidence in their delivery.
