About Soulful Sufi & Qawwali Nights
When I perform, it is not just about hitting the notes. My band Murshid and I craft a 'mehfil'—a space where we mix shayari with music, guiding the energy from intimate, soulful ghazals to high-tempo Sufi fusion. We always read the room; if your guests want to listen closely, we keep it acoustic and heartfelt, but if the energy is high, we turn up the beat to get everyone moving.
My approach to a Sufi night is rooted in my training in the Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, but I believe music must evolve to connect with a modern audience. That is why Murshid is more than just a vocal act; we are a rhythm-heavy ensemble. Depending on the scale of your event, I bring a team ranging from a three-piece acoustic setup for private dinners to a grand ten-piece ensemble with backing vocalists for large-scale concerts.
We do not just perform a setlist. We build a journey. We start with the adab and depth of traditional qawwali, paying tribute to legends like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and then weave in contemporary Bollywood Sufi tracks that everyone knows. Whether it’s 'Mere Rashke Qamar' or a high-energy fusion number, the focus remains on the interplay between the tabla, dholak, and electric guitar.
