Harikatha and Traditional Storytelling Training
Harikatha is where Carnatic music meets the power of philosophy and storytelling. We guide students through the traditional art of pravachanam to share these timeless narratives with confidence.
A proud moment watching my student Uppili present 'Sri Rama Gunarnavam', a Harikatha exploring the virtues of Lord Rama. This performance showcases the culmination of dedicated practice in both vocal music and the intricate art of pravachanam, or spiritual discourse.
This is an invitation to a Harikatha performance by my student at The Bangalore Gayana Samaja, a respected institution for classical arts. My students are encouraged and given platforms to perform, and these events are open for all to attend and experience.
About Harikatha: The Art of Musical Storytelling
Harikatha is a confluence of Carnatic music, rhythmic precision, and philosophical storytelling. In our sessions, we move beyond just learning Kritis, focusing on Manodharma Sangeetham—the art of improvisation—and the technique of Pravachanam. It is about learning to hold an audience’s attention through the depth of your voice and the clarity of your narrative.
At Rhythmotion, Harikatha training is rooted in the systematic structure of South Indian classical music. We begin with the essentials: Shruti and Laya training, ensuring a strong vocal foundation before integrating the complexity of traditional discourse.
Students learn to weave Bhajans, Devaranamas, and Shlokas into a cohesive narrative, much like our students do during presentations at institutions like the Bangalore Gayana Samaja. This is not about memorization; it is about internalization. We teach you how to analyze the Raga and Tala to best suit the emotional arc of a story.
Our curriculum covers:
- Foundational Vocal Mastery: Aligning pitch and learning the nuances of Gamakas.
- Narrative Construction: Understanding how to structure a Harikatha session for maximum engagement.
- Philosophical Depth: Deep dives into the texts to ensure the storytelling is authentic and well-informed.
We offer mentorship that prepares you for both intimate gatherings and larger concert stages. Whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned musician looking to add storytelling to your repertoire, our sessions at our Rustam Bagh studio provide a supportive environment. We believe in performance as the ultimate test of learning, and we actively create opportunities for our students to showcase their work at events like our annual 'Chalana' festival.
