Music is a legacy passed down through generations. Explore the heart of our teaching, rooted in the discipline of the Guru Parampara and our family's Gokulam tradition in Bengaluru.

This is a clip from my very first Carnatic concert almost 27 years ago. I'm sharing this, though I'm a bit embarrassed, to remember the love and belief from my parents and Gurus that set me on this path.

A precious memory from my maiden concert in 1998. You can see my mother looking on, terrified I might run off stage! It takes a community to nurture an artist, and I am so grateful for mine.

My Appa and Amma being welcomed at the celebration of my father's 50 years in music. Their support has been the bedrock of my entire life and career.

My Appa, Vidwan H S Venugopal, holding roses from his students. He always says he is a 'senior student of music', and that humility and lifelong dedication to learning is the greatest lesson he has taught me.

A student performing a conch invocation at the 'SUVARNA VENU' event. It was a beautiful moment showing the continuation of our musical lineage through the next generation.

A group of my father's students playing the flute in unison. This image perfectly captures the idea of the Guru Parampara, a river of knowledge flowing from teacher to students.

A senior artist speaking at my father's celebration. The respect and love from friends, family, and well wishers in the room was a testament to a life beautifully lived in music.

This quote shared by ELLE magazine tells a bit about my beginnings. I feel so blessed that I was able to recognize Carnatic ragas as a toddler. It feels like music was always a part of me.

These words capture my feelings perfectly. Life is not a solo act, it's a huge collaboration. I presented this concert as an offering of gratitude to everyone who has been part of my 25-year journey.

About My Musical Roots & Guru Parampara

The heart of my teaching is the Gokulam Academy in Subramanyapura, where we practice the traditional Guru Parampara. We limit our monthly training batches to small cohorts of 5 to 15 students, ensuring that whether you are learning Geethams or Varnams, you get direct oversight from Vidwan H.S. Venugopal or our senior disciples, keeping the classical discipline and pitch accuracy intact.

Our monthly training program is built on the exact foundations that shaped my own journey since childhood. We prioritize the Guru Parampara—the sacred teacher-student bond—which means your learning is personalized, gradual, and deep.

We focus on the essential pillars of Carnatic music:

  • Precision: Strict adherence to pitch (Shruti) and rhythm (Tala) which forms the bedrock of your voice culture.
  • Methodology: We follow the oral transmission of Geethams, Varnams, and Keerthanams, allowing you to internalize the nuances of the raga rather than just reading notes off a page.
  • Community: You are not just a student in a classroom; you are part of the Gokulam family. Our small batch sizes allow for regular feedback, practice logs, and a shared learning environment where progress is celebrated together.

Whether you are starting with basic Swaras or looking to refine your performance, our academy provides a space where classical rigor meets the joy of community learning. We invite students of all levels who are ready to commit to the discipline and love of this art form.
