Our Approach to Classical Dance and Music Training
For me, teaching is a spiritual practice, or saadhana. Here is the story and vision behind the school I have built over the last two decades.
People often ask me why I chose to teach. In this clip, I share my belief that Indian classical arts are a blessing, and it is my life's purpose to pass this beautiful tradition on to the next generation so they can experience its joy.
Establishing my school, SSCD, was a significant milestone in my life. Here, I talk about my vision to expand our offerings to include a wide range of art forms, creating a complete artistic hub for students in India and abroad.
This shares the story of how my school began two decades ago. We have grown from a small classroom into a reputed institution known for preserving Indian culture and providing a strong foundation in classical arts.
Our vision is to be a global center for classical dance education where tradition meets innovation. My mission is to impart authentic training rooted in traditional values while inspiring creativity and confidence in every student.
This introduces my role as the Founder and Artistic Director. With over 25 years of experience, my focus is on guiding students to understand not just technique, but the soul of the art form.
About Our Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is simple: there are no shortcuts. Whether you are learning Bharatanatyam or Carnatic vocal, we prioritize the foundation—bhava (expression), raga (melody), and tala (rhythm)—over rushing through steps. I believe that if you practice with patience and devotion, your own dance voice will naturally emerge.
When I started Sreejaya's School of Classical Dance in 2004, my goal was to create a space that felt like home. Over the past 20 years, we have grown from a small classroom into a community where students, including my own daughter, learn to live the art form. We strictly follow the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam, known for its precision and grace, but our teaching method is deeply personal.
I always say, Sangeetham oru saadhana aanu (music is a spiritual practice). This belief extends to our dance classes as well. We do not just teach movements; we teach discipline. This is why our training includes everything from basic Sarali Varisais in music to the complex abhinaya (expression) in dance.
We offer both online and offline classes, with our main studio located in HSR Layout, Bangalore. For those who come to the studio, we maintain traditional floor seating to keep the environment grounded. For our online students, we ensure the sessions remain interactive, focusing on real-time corrections of pitch and posture. Whether you are seven or thirty-seven, I believe it is never too late to begin this journey. Our school is not just about certification or exams; it is about passing on the blessing of Indian classical arts to the next generation so they can experience its joy.
