Indian Miniature Painting Workshops in Mumbai
A slow, meditative deep dive into 18th-century botanical art. Learn to grind pigments and paint on traditional Vasli paper in our quiet Pali Hill studio.
Meet Divya Pamnani, the wonderful artist who teaches our Indian miniature painting workshops. Here, she explains the process of using traditional materials like 'vasli' paper, stone pigments from Bikaner, and fine squirrel hair brushes called 'kalams'.
A glimpse into a miniature painting session at the lab. You can see the intense focus as a student practices their drawing, while Divya explains the technique. It's a process that truly makes you slow down and connect with your art.
I believe art is for everyone, and in this chat with miniature artist Divya, we talk about why. We discuss how a beginner can find joy in the slow, focused process of miniature painting, and how even a professional artist can unlearn and discover something new.
Here’s a closer look at the beautiful results from our Indian Miniature Painting workshop. You can see the fine details and rich colors achieved using traditional stone pigments on special vasli paper. Each piece, from the delicate flowers to the palm tree, tells its own quiet story.
About Indian Miniature Painting
This isn't just about finishing a painting. In these two days, you will trade your screens for handmade stone pigments from Bikaner and fine squirrel-hair brushes known as kalams. It is a quiet, rhythmic process that forces you to slow down and focus entirely on the microscopic details of 18th-century botanical motifs on traditional Vasli paper.
A Different Way to Create
Most of our days are spent rushing, but this workshop is the opposite. We host these sessions in our Pali Hill studio specifically to offer a break from the noise of the city. Whether you consider yourself an artist or someone who cannot draw a straight line, this format works because it relies on focus and repetition rather than wild creativity.
What Happens in the Workshop
This is an intensive 8-hour curriculum spread over two days. You will learn the entire process, from grinding raw stone pigments to mastering the precision required for Mughal and Rajput botanical styles. We use traditional Vasli paper—a multi-layered surface designed specifically to hold these natural pigments. You will not be using standard art-store supplies. We provide authentic kalams (fine-hair brushes) and pigments sourced directly from Bikaner, so you experience the craft exactly as it was practiced centuries ago.
Who This Is For
We designed this for people who need to 'unlearn' modern habits. If you are a professional artist, you will find depth in the meditative technique. If you are a total beginner, you will find peace in the simplicity of just working with color and paper. You walk in with curiosity, and you leave with a finished, frame-worthy botanical painting that you created from scratch.
