Bharatanatyam is a conversation between dancer, music, and audience. My solo recitals explore the nuances of abhinaya, bringing ancient poetry and deep-rooted emotion to life through every gesture.

Abhinaya is the soul of my dance. In this intimate moment from a performance, I am interpreting a Surdas lullaby where mother Yashoda tells baby Krishna the story of the Ramayana. It is a delicate blend of singing and expression, portraying multiple characters and emotions.

Even after many years, revisiting a varnam is always a joy. This is a small clip of me exploring the abhinaya possibilities within a classic composition, finding new layers of meaning in the raga and sahitya.

This is a moment from a solo recital, where the stage becomes a sacred space. Here, I am exploring the nuances of 'Spring' through abhinaya, letting the music and poetry guide every movement. The interplay of light and shadow helps create the mood for the rasikas.

The compositions handed down by our gurus are timeless gems. Here, I am revisiting a beautiful Dandayudapani Pillai varnam, discovering new possibilities for interpretation and expression in the music and poetry.

Dance is Yoga. On World Yoga Day, I reflect on how every moment of classical dance is a tribute to yoga-shakti. This pose embodies the balance, strength, and spiritual energy that connects these two ancient practices.

A beautiful swara pattern provides the perfect landscape to depict the arrival of Manmatha, the god of love, heralding spring. This piece, performed at Ramgarh Shekhawati, is an exploration of anticipation and romance from the Ashtapadi.

Some pieces allow for wonderful improvisation, especially with a talented team of musicians. This performance of a Kalidasa poem in Sanskrit was a joy to perform, as I played with the expressions and moods suggested by the live music.

The poetry of Kalidasa is a choreographer's delight. This excerpt from his 'Ritusamhara' describes the arrival of Vasant or Spring, and I use the rich imagery of his metaphors to create a visual tapestry through dance.

A performance for SPICMACAY at Amity International, which we managed to present despite a severe thunderstorm. The show must go on, and it is always a pleasure to share our art with young students.

Performing for students is always a special experience. This image captures a moment of peace and balance during my SPICMACAY presentation, with their distinctive and beautiful backdrop.

About Solo Recitals: The Art of Abhinaya

Every recital I perform is backed by a full five-piece live orchestra, as recorded tracks simply cannot capture the spontaneous dialogue between my rhythm and the musician’s melody. When you book a performance, we are not just planning a show; we are setting the stage for a living, breathing artistic conversation that relies entirely on the immediate interplay between sound and movement.

My solo recitals follow the traditional Margam repertoire, a structured journey that allows for a slow, rhythmic build. This sequence typically begins with a Pushpanjali and evolves into complex varnams, padams, and a final tillana. The hallmark of my performance is abhinaya—the art of expression. Whether I am portraying the divine mischief of Krishna or the intricate metaphors of Kalidasa's poetry, my goal is to communicate these stories clearly, even to those unfamiliar with the classical arts.

The Importance of the Live Orchestra

I do not perform to recorded music. The live ensemble—vocalist, mridangam, violin, flute, and nattuvangam—is the heartbeat of the performance. This arrangement allows for improvisation and ensures that the music breathes with my movements. You will need to account for stage space and acoustic requirements that accommodate these five musicians.

Practical Requirements for Your Venue

To ensure both safety and the quality of the visual experience, a proper wooden dance floor is essential. Proper stage lighting is also a requirement, as we use light to highlight the facial expressions and mudras that form the core of abhinaya. If your event is outside the Delhi NCR region, my team and I will coordinate travel and logistics for the full ensemble, ensuring that the production quality remains consistent regardless of the venue.

I have dedicated my life to the practice and preservation of Bharatanatyam, treating every stage as a space for devotion and storytelling. For me, dance is a way to breathe life into the timeless poetry of our culture, whether I am interpreting the playfulness of Krishna or the profound metaphors of Kalidasa.
