The Kodály Method in Action: Playful Learning
We transform how children engage with Western classical music. Through the Kodály method, we use movement, song, and interactive tools to turn rhythm and pitch into a fun, natural experience for every student.
This video shows a classic Kodály circle game in progress. Students pass a ball while singing, an activity designed to internalize a steady beat and improve listening skills in a collaborative and fun setting.
Joy is a key ingredient in our classrooms. Here, children are tossing colourful scarves in the air, an exercise that helps them visualize musical phrases and experience the feeling of high and low pitches through movement.
Using scarves helps children connect physical movement with musical expression. This activity enhances their understanding of pulse, develops gross motor skills, and encourages creative interpretation of the music they hear.
A teacher guides students in a group scarf activity. This demonstrates how you will learn to lead a class in coordinated movements that reinforce musical concepts like tempo and dynamics in a visually engaging way.
In our outreach programmes, we use simple props like these blue ribbons to teach concepts of pulse and pitch. The students sing a song about the weather while interacting with the prop, making the lesson memorable and engaging.
Here, students hold onto bright orange ribbons, creating a "sun" in their music class. This group activity fosters teamwork and helps children physically feel the steady pulse of the music as they move together.
A wider view of the "sun" activity, showing how the entire class participates. You will learn how to manage group dynamics and use props effectively to create an inclusive and interactive learning environment for every child.
A close-up of a happy student participating in the ribbon activity. Our goal is to create positive and joyful musical experiences, and our training focuses on the techniques that bring out this natural enthusiasm in children.
This montage captures the energy and variety of our 'Discover Music' classes. It shows a mix of singing, movement, and instrument play, giving a comprehensive look at the dynamic classroom environment you will be trained to lead.
About The Kodály Method in Action: Playful Learning
You will notice our classes rarely involve sitting still. We use the Kodály method to turn abstract concepts like pulse and pitch into physical games. By the time a child learns to read notation, they have already internalized the rhythm through movement with colourful scarves, ribbons, and tactile percussion. It is a seamless transition from pure play to structured understanding, designed to keep their curiosity and love for music alive long after the session ends.
Building Musicianship Through Play
The Kodály approach is not about strict discipline but about fostering an intuitive relationship with sound. In our 'Discover Music' classes, we focus on what the child hears and feels before we introduce complex theory. This creates a secure foundation that makes future learning much easier.
Why Movement Matters
Music is physical. When we use chiffon scarves to demonstrate a melody's rise and fall, or use ribbons to map out a steady pulse, children are not just watching; they are physically engaging with musical architecture. This kinesthetic approach helps them:
- Internalize Pitch: Connecting high and low notes to physical height.
- Understand Pulse: Feeling the beat through games rather than memorizing definitions.
- Build Confidence: Removing the pressure of performance, replacing it with the joy of discovery.
Expert-Led Training
Our teacher training modules are led by Naheed Shimala, an expert from the UK who specializes in early years education. Participants learn to manage group dynamics, use sensory aids effectively, and construct lessons that are both pedagogical and genuinely entertaining. Whether you are an aspiring music educator or a parent wanting to understand your child's progress, you will see exactly how to turn a classroom into an environment where music thrives. We invite you to join our community in Kemps Corner, where our legacy of musical excellence meets the vibrant energy of the next generation.
