Creative Placemaking and Public Art Design
Public spaces should connect people rather than just occupying land. I design community-focused areas and art installations that give neighbourhoods a unique identity and purpose.
Conceptual drawings and site plans for the Hutti Museum Park. This project is an exercise in large-scale placemaking, designed to create a public park that tells a story, facilitates social ecosystems, and connects with its natural and cultural landscape.
A Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata reinterpreting Van Gogh's "Starry Night." I am deeply inspired by this kind of ephemeral architecture, where artists create breathtaking public installations that transform the street and bring art to everyone.
The Hatibagan pandal during Durga Puja, showcasing incredible craftsmanship with bamboo and thread. These temporary structures are powerful examples of community-led placemaking, creating sacred and celebratory spaces within the urban fabric.
About Placemaking & Public Art
When you approach a public space, the budget often feels like a constraint, but I see it as a chance to be creative. I rely on raw, sustainable materials like bamboo, steel, or even upcycled components from the site itself, which reduces cost while adding authentic character. Before we plan, we conduct a narrative discovery process to ensure the design respects the site history and local community needs.
My practice at MapBee is built on the belief that public spaces are living ecosystems. Whether I am designing a permanent park like the Hutti Museum or ephemeral structures inspired by traditional craftsmanship, the goal remains the same: to create a connection.
We begin with a site audit to understand what can be retained or repurposed. For public art and pop-up events, we prioritize a workshop framework that brings together local artisans, muralists, and residents. This participatory approach ensures that the project feels like it belongs to the people who use it daily.
Technical coordination is just as vital as the concept. For hardscape projects, I provide detailed grading plans and specify native planting to ensure the space survives with low maintenance. When we transform older structures into public hubs, I focus on structural safety through close collaboration with engineers while using salvaged items like old doors and windows to maintain the building's memory.
I am committed to designing spaces that are not just visually engaging but structurally sound and environmentally responsible. If you have a site that needs a new narrative, let's look at how we can integrate art, landscape, and function to make it a landmark for your community.
